To create a sense of the world on the brink of total anarchy has never been rendered as well as in that first film; it is our world - albeit an older one to my youth - but on the edge and breaking down. It's far more frightening, isolating and thought provoking. In many ways, it is a horror film - a kind of horror-revenge that was popular in the 70s but made with the craft of something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's a genuinely important film that is superior in certain aspects, though I admit it is inferior as an action film - and possibly as an enjoyable movie.
I've have to once again agree with Pauli77. MM1 and MM2 were 5/5 stars with each having their own strengths. And both are thought provoking and terrifying worlds, in a great science fiction way. Not so much with MM3, although very interesting and a fairly well done movie (victim to some really questionable writing/plot points).
Much like the really dumb decision to have the same actor play a major role but probably different character in MM2 and MM3 with the pilot... I don't understand why use the same actor for two key bad guys in MM1 and MM4. Has Hollywood ran out of candidates? Is it purposeful to generate this discussion and interest (if so, perhaps a tip of the hat for creating controversy). Much like the pilot, though, I fear it detracts from the story, plot, and action quite needlessly. Yes, it's obvious that TC would have died from the head-on high speed collision with the rig. On some miracle he momentarily wasn't killed, he would not have survived to get medical treatment (let's not forget that Max's wife and child died from being run over by motorcycles which would have done much less damage than hitting a semi-truck at 100 mph). If it turns out that it is the TC, this movie just tanked in my mind as simply beyond absurd and I'll walk out of the film.
Why not have Wez come back too as a mowhawk motorbike beserker called Crazyman Jones!? I mean, come on...

You have to be kidding me....of course they are not the same. Immortan Joe has such a drastically different look to Toe Cutter.

Hugh Keays-Byrne has been in Ozploitation films, and is a fine choice for Fury Road. Nice to see him back in big Feature film.

I agree. I'm saddened he hasn't done more American films. He'd have made a fine villain. Or even in comedy: "arghh! I hate guns!" Lol

I think he was cast in Millers version of Justice League that was dropped, so it was natural and polite of Miller to offer him a role in the next project, especially it being a Mad Max movie.

Next is the compareson of MM1 to MM2.
And its been made plenty of times before and quite a few people forget totally the context in which they were made.
MM1 is Byrons and Georges FIRST MOVIE. Which they scrounged for money, almost went broke making it and used FIRST TIME actors... pretty clear isnt it?
MM2 was a fully funded movie made by people a lot more experience under their belts.
The theme of the movie continued on and that was Max's story.
MM1 the world had almost fallen apart socially/politically due to the oil crisis.
Maxs life then fell apart.
MM2 the oil war HAD taken place, there is bugger all left of society. Maxs character had been in the wastelands for a few yrs.
Yes you cant compare the two films in the context that they arent the same because this is an evolving story of Max. (not to mention the film makers/ story writers)
They do how ever follow a time line and you see Maxs world crumble and his persona change.
Hi. Just joined so I could reply to this.
I would suggest that MM1 is not even the same genre as the other three. The others are fantasy blockbusters, while MM1 is a 70s genre thriller/road movie with a futuristic theme. As soon as they started doing those high shots of multiple vehicles, it became a whole different beast.

I don't think the "high shots" were the reason they changed. I think it had more to do with the stories being told in the past tense by people further in the future than the story being told.

I agree with all previous comments but am surprised no one has questioned just before IJ gets killed he says to Max 'remember me?'

I've only seen the movie once but doesn't Max flashback/hallucinate seeing Imortan Joe run over the little girl he couldn't save? When Furiousa was about to drive out on the motorcycles with the other women doesn't Max say they should go back because they both needed redemption? So could Max have met Joe before or because he is "mad" he thinks Joe is the one who killed the little girl?
