Not sure what "crewing up" means exactly. I always thought it refered to the period before principle photography starts when the various crew members and technicians begin to assemble and start working together as a team. If that's the case, then there's no way they're crewing up in March for an August shoot. That's far too early, I would think.
Rather, this timing suggests a late May or June start as was posted to IMDb earlier last year. It's also in agreement with Hardy's comment about heading off to Australia in April and, if the rumored 30 week shooting schedule holds true, agrees with Baruchel's remark that Teresa Palmer will be on set through the end of the year.
And just a reminder. Mel's 'How I spent My Summer Vacation' should be in post by then.
Well, it would be nice if someone with knowledge of the industry could explain to me exactly what "crewing up" means in this instance. There was a news article from May of last year that spoke of technicians being hired for the film, so I assumed by now that the bulk of hiring has already been completed and that the "crewing up" period is just their contracted start-of-work date, but I could be mistaken. Anybody?

That's an interesting thought. Gibson not as THE director, but as A director on Fury Road. Miller co-directed Thunderdome with George Ogilvie and, though not exactly the same thing, worked with animation directors on his Happy Feet movies. Considering he'll have two giant movies up and running at the same time, I always though he might need some help. Still, Gibson co-directing Fury Road is highly unlikely.
Someone claiming to be a Broken Hill resident posted this over on another board. If he's right, Fury Road starts filming in May!
Filming will start here in may, broken hill nsw australia(and surrounding areas).Where most of mad max 2 was filmed,gm must like this spot alot. There is going to be alot of extras(around 400) and you can sign up soon.I live in broken hill and it made the front page of our local rag.The town is pumped that its coming back to the hill.Just hope its not another thunderdome as that sucked.
The decision to film the new Mad Max movie in the Broken Hill area will bring the city a $10 million windfall, according to the city's tourism manager.
City Council's Fiona Ellis said the decision by director George Miller to make the fourth installment of the cult film series locally would be the biggest thing the city has ever seen.
Filming of "Fury Road" will begin here in August next year, 28 years after Mad Max 2 was filmed here, and is set to employ scores of locals.
"It's a fantastic coup for the city," Ms Ellis said.
"It will employ over 100 locals, they'll be extras, caterers, runners, location people.
"They're bringing 300 cast and crew with them.
"It's quite huge, we've never really seen anything like this before.
"Even with Mission Impossible Two it had a huge budget but we only got a small part of that."
Ms Ellis said it was likely that members of the film crew would begin arriving in March with the bulk of the crew arriving in August.
"It has a budget in excess of $100 million, 30 weeks of filming in Broken Hill," she said.
"When we put that figure into the calculator we usually use it works out to be about $10 million for the local economy."
Ms Ellis said Film Broken Hill had worked hard to make the possibility of filming the movie locally a reality.
"There was no guarantee that we were going to get it. We were up against another three locations," she said.
"It didn't just happen. Film Broken Hill worked really, really hard on this. They've been working on this since January.
"We're absoloutely delighted that all that hard work paid off."
While George Miller is remaining tight-lipped about the lead role, rumour has it that it won't be Mel Gibson.
Mr Miller told a news conference in Sydney on Saturday that he was keeping an open mind and even looking in Australia.
"It could be Mel, it could be anyone. In fact I'm looking around at these faces to see if anyone's quite interesting here," he said.
Fury Road will be filmed in similar locations to Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, the second in the series, concentrating on the desert landscape around Silverton and the Pinnacles.
FWIW, IMDb is now listing a Russian (!) release date of June 9, 2011. For the sake of discussion, lets assume that it's correct info and that it's also the date of the U.S. release as Fury Road could very well be released "day and date" in the U.S. and several major foreign markets. Looking at the release schedule for that time frame, we have...
May 20 - Pirates of the Caribbean 4
May 26 - The Hangover 2
June 3 - King Fu Panda 2
June 17 - Green Lantern
As you can see, there's currently no major release scheduled for that particular weekend. That weekend would also mean Fury Road would be great counter-programming to two movies already in theaters, a comedy in The Hangover 2 and a family film in Kung Fu Panda 2. The only problem I see is that another WB tentpole is being released the very next weekend (Green Lantern). Would WB release two of their biggest films of the year so close together?
The release date is doable if filming starts in May or June as recently rumored. Since all signs still point to a Summer 2011 release, I don't think the August 2010 start of filming reported by folks attending the press conference is correct.
Well, if this is right ( and there's no reason this isn't), IMDb, from the beginning, was well-informed about the summer 2011 release... while everyone else announced a 2012 date! At least We, Mad Max fans, have to agree on one thing: the genesis of Fury Road is an adventure in itself, full of developments!
