Audio mistake with the MM2 Blu-Ray?

Post by Uncle Entity »

From the BLU-RAY.COM forum:

Forgot to add, the BLU RAY IS CUT.

There's a serious glitch at one point with many bits of dialogue DELETED that always were in the movie. You can hear it because some of papagallo dialogue is suddenly switching to the old man (speaking with Papagallo voice !), it's more evident in the foreign dubs on the disc.

Here's the uncut scene (alas in german, but you get the drift)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdJ_OMcVECk&NR=1

The red star indicates moments that are CUT from this supposely UNCUT movie remaster.

I think it's time this is bought back to Warner, so that they can start an exchange program. Because not only the movie doesn't look color timed / corrected, it's also cut. I'm sure many here will be pissed off to find that out but hey
.
------------------------------------>

its not a fault nor a 'glitch' with the blu-ray, so there wont be any exchange programs. That scene/dialog is missing in pretty much all the DVDs I know of. You can get it on the VHS releases though.

heres what i just done with my VHS version;;

papagallo - "and let us suppose he keeps it, and we walk away from here with our lives...and what then? do we wander the wasteland and become like them, savages??"

*max plays with musical thing and feral kid* mumbling background speech between papagallo and old man

papagallo - "but remember, remember one thing, thats is more than just a tanker of gas, thats our lifeline to a place beyond vermin and machines, to a place where we can start again!"

Old Man- "thats 2000 miles from here how do you expect us to get it there? drag it?"

papagallo - "if we have to yes, but the first step, defend the fuel and i stay, alone if i have to, ill leave them nothign but i promise.."

its a prime example of why not to be so quick in throwing away vhs untill its been transfered to DVD. The dialog is also missing from the HD-DVD release too.

I don't believe those extra lines of dialogue were ever in the U.S. theatrical release of the film, so it makes sense that they're not on the DVD / Bluray.
I've seen the movie a lot, including off of vintage 35mm and 70mm prints in the last few years and Papagallo's line always stops with "defend the fuel".

As for the bluray not being properly colortimed, that's possible. I've seen some comparison shots people have posted and their does seem to be a lot more green grass visible than I remember. But without Miller or Semler weighing in about what their original intent was with the picture, we'll never know for sure.

Those extra lines from papagallo are from the tv cut (see the section on the tv cut on this site) As far as I know they were never included in a theatrical version, only used to add time to the tv version.

The first bit is the same as on my DVD (I think) but the second part has got something extra that is not on my DVD. That is not the part with the red star but the last 2 lines from Papagello befor we see the woman saying "words, just words".
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

It's not an audio mistake, those lines were deleted from the film and it's a bit of a shame too as their quite good and would have made sense within the film.

I distinctly remember these lines. And I have to say, I did feel they were missing on some version I watched recently (probably the Blu-ray), although I can't remember for sure.

"And I stay. Alone if I have to. I'll leave them nothing. That I promise you".

"Words! Just Words!... etc"

I'll have to dig through my various versions here when I get a chance (ha! like that will happen any time soon), and see if I can confirm exactly which versions the line appears in. I always remember it though, so it must have at least been on the old TV versions or Australian VHS releases.

The aussie version (MadMax 2 The Road Warrior) on VHS (Which is the collectors edition) and the DVD contain all that "missing" dialogue

When the orginal MadMAx movie was released on the Australian DVD they lost one line when Max is pulling Johnny the Boy by the ankle.... and also the really crappy "explosion" sound effect!

Another movie which when it made it DVD was "Duel". A few of the sound effects were lost (or their timing was changed)when it went to DVD.
We are 100% snafu....

The answer is yes, no, and maybe. Confused now?
The answer is, yes it's flawed if you were expecting the Aussie VHS version or some other non-U.S. version that contains a few snippets of extra dialogue.
No it's not flawed if you expect to see the same exact cut of the film that was in U.S. theatres and was released previously on DVD.

As to whether or not the colors in the transfer are exactly what they should be, that's up for debate so that part is a maybe.

The bottom line is, you don't have a choice. This is the only hidef version of the film available if you have a U.S. region bluray player and I wouldn't expect a different version in the next few years. Besides, the aforementioned debated "flaws" do nothing to change the fact that this is the highest resolution (both video and audio) home video release the film has ever had.
