An intro - And sad moments in the Max trilogy...

Post by Toe Cutter »

Hey everyone,

First I want to introduce myself. My name's Dennis and you're going to be hearing a lot from me in the future. God, I wish there was some sort of official Mad Max chat room. Maybe on IRC or something. (maybe one of us needs to start one). I say this b/c, lately, I have Mad Max fever again. I've been a fan for about 10 years. I own three Mad Max Tshirts (I had four, but if you can believe... I gave one to a girl I was dating once... and then we broke up. Grrrr, I should've taken it back. It was a rare Road Warrior shirt). I was at a convention recently and I bought a cool Mad Max keychain. Also own some posters, the three adaptations, all the soundtracks (I listen to them when I write), the figures, and anything else I can get my hands on. I even wrote a film script once where one of the main characters was obsessed with Mad Max. (autobiographical I guess).

Anyway, I'm telling you all this b/c I'm just glad to be here in the presence of such diehard fans. I can no longer make fun of "trekkies" because I'm the equivalent with Mad Max. And... God, I feel like discussing the movies so badly right now... but there's no friggin' chat room.

Okay, here is where I honestly get to the point. I'm going to list what I feel are some of the saddest moments in the Mad Max trilogy. And, mind you, when I say "sad," I don't mean sad like the Warrior Women catching some arrows in her gut (she deserved that).... I mean "sad" like... only a fan of the movies would find it sad.

Here are some. And I urge anyone else to think of more:

1) When the Knightrider's car explodes. Let us not forget that, like the black on black, the Knightrider's car was a custom police car witha V8 Interceptor. Had that car survived, Max's black on black would no longer have been the last one.

2) By far, one of the saddest moments for me, as a fan, has to be in The Road Warrior when the black on black flies off the road and gets wrecked. God, I want to KILL Wez and that friggin exhaust pipe he uses. It gets worse though... because then "Dog" bites it...... and then the car blows up. I cry every time I see that.

3) Funny, recently, I discovered a VERY sad moment in Thunderdome. I never noticed this before, but during the final chase scene, Max is hanging off a dune buggy and some marauder is hanging off of Max.... and as the marauder falls off, he tears Max's sacred leather jacket with him.

I hate how Max is slowly stripped of all his coolest items and friends. First Goose, then Jesse and Sprog, then he loses his dog, then his car, then all his weapons (when he gets banished from Bartertown), then even his awesome leather jacket (that has survived countless adventures) gets torn off him.

That just saddens me to no end. Leave the pour guy alone.

Anyway, I hope some people respond to this. I have a whole theory about "The Dark One" backstory from the first film. Plus, I want to vent on how dissapointing the second half of Thunderdome is. Unlike the other two films, which get better and better with each viewing, the second half of Thunderdome gets worse and worse for me with each viewing. (bad guys getting smacked in the face by pots and pans???? c'mon on!!!)

Comments?

- Dennis

Dannis,

Actually, the second half of THUNDERDOME is far better than the first half. Max's encounter with the kids was pretty frightening - the whole Crack In The Earth sequence was atmospheric and terrific!

Then, the action. The undertaking of Underworld was well-filmed and plausible. Max appeared a bit confused but... the whole sequence gave us the sense of disorder and chaos. Bartertown's annihilation was epic and tragic at the same time. The chase scene was an example of GREAT, EXCELLENT film-making. The direction reached its climax. From a certain prospective, I prefer the direction of MM3 chase scene to that of MM2 chase scene. The MM3 chase scene was a tongue-in-cheek, fast, mind-boggling, visionary piece of art. Finally, the ending of the movie was poetic and visionary.

Actually, my cousin (he's 23/4 years old) went hit in the face by the sequence of the fryin' pan. He yelled: "Arggggggghhh what pain!". Keep in mind it's pretty realistic, because you see the blood and the sound was quite... creeeeeepy!

Anyway, in my book, the saddest moment is when Max lost the jacket!

Welcome to board!

Let's state something here. I'm an HUGE ROAD WARRIOR FAN too. But I have to say every Mad Max movie gets its own "embarassement moments" that make you cringe... sort of. For example, in RW, when the GYROCOPTER went hit by the Marauder... ad suddenly started to fall. The whole scene is ridiculous! Look Bruce Spence's face! And it's impossible he was still alive!

But c'mon... the MAD MAX MOVIES are so special because they mixed up poetry with cheesy, action with slow-paced moments, violence with tenderness, reality with fantasy. THEY ARE ALL 3 EXCELLENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Image

Goose getting burned is the saddest moment, right behind the black-on-black exploding. I can't even bring myself to watch Roadwarrior because I get so upset by the loss of the car.

Even knowing it was a duplicate, I agree the loss of the Interceptor is a hard one to take. Deep or not, I'm really not a big fan of Thunderdome at all. IMO, the disappointing part of that one was between the beginning and end credits.(ZIP! Our hero dons his flame-proof suit)

Dont worry too much about the Leather Jacket. Look closeley at the last shot of Max as he walks into the dusk at the very end of MM3 he's wearing his jacket again.

Movie direction mistake or intentional? One would assume that Max walked back and picked it up off the ground at the end of MM3. He's a survivor and would know that he needs that jacket to survive in the cold desert night.

check out http://www.max.org there used to be a publicity shot on one the pages titled "The life of Max" it was Max in post-end-of-mm3 guise sitting on a cliff edge. he clearly has his jacket on at that point.

Welcome Dennis. Now WTF is wrong with being a Trekkie? Image Don't tell me I'm the only one here?? Classic, TNG and current series .... oh well .... I'm used to being the odd duck LOL

One of my saddest moments was in Thunderdome when they all left him alone in the end .... again ..... , especially Savannah who should have stayed with him Image

And one very UN-realistic part I thought was in the first one when Jessie came running back out of the woods and runs into the house and sits there crying for herself and not even thinking about where her SON is. Every time I watch it, I can't believe how LONG it takes her to think of Sprog. And lets go running down the freakin' middle of the highway to make us a nice easy target for the bikers .......

I hate it when a woman in a movie is being chased by a car. Where does she run? Duh...Right down the middle of the road. Darwin was right.Image

Like Toe Cutter says there's no official Mad Max chat room, right? Well, we can talk through ICQ or create an ICQ user list or something... what do you think guys???

I'd like to know how many forum members have ICQ and are ready to talk with other Max fans.
