Whats your take on this. Bruce Spence plays the Gyro Captain in MM2 and the "FlyGuy" in Thunderdome. Is he supposed to be the same character? To me, he is. It makes sense since hes flying in both movies and since he was supposed to have travelled with the "tribe" at the end of MM2 and hypothetically got it on with the blonde chick, that would explain his kid in Thunderdome.
My question is, if he IS supposed to be the same character, why the actions, reactions and treatment of Max by him in Thunderdome, esp acting like he was a freakin stranger?

This one has been discussed at length in the past (check archived posts) no consensus was reached, there are people in both camps. Officially though, (according to Dr. Miller himself) they are NOT the same character.

I always thought they weren't the same person, for a couple of reasons.
The Gyro Captain is said to lead the compound people to the "paradise" Curmudgeon refers to in the postcards. Jedediah sure isn't living in any paradise! And where are the others?
Plus, there is no shred of recognition between the two of them. And the Gyro Captain was a "nice" guy. Jedediah is an amoral opportunist.
And he has good teeth, unlike the Gyro Captain!
But others may disagree.

As Ironbar & the Collector escort Max to Auty's Jedidiah peeks out from behind some hanging stuff..
He smiles in what, to me, looks like recognition.
He clearly recognizes Max. HOW?
He couldn't have seen Max's face during the 'Jacking of the Camel team..
(Possibly he recognized the clothes Max wore, but those were covered by his robes as he drove the camels)
Max enters Jedidiah's underground home. He skids to a halt as he sees Jedidiah..
(Let's see if I can get the dialog right, shall we?)
Max: You!
Jedidiah: Who, ME?
M: Yeah, you've got a PLANE
J I have?
*Plane engine starts in the background*
M: Uh huh. It might just save your life.
J: It will?
At this point Max seems to recognize Jedidiah, despite the fact that he could not have SEEN his face while being sprawled in the dirt after being knocked off his Caravan by an airplane.
(Again, one could have recognized the other by his clothes, but with the dust? I doubt he could have made out THAT much detail)
In this scene, I believe Max saw his old adversary/ally and made the quick logical assumption that the pilot was still a pilot and was probably the one who got him into this mess in the first place..
If memory serves, the Movie Souvenier Magazine quoted miller as saying Jedidiah MAY be Gyro Captain..
Anyone confirm this?
My copy of the magazine has been unaccounted for since a few months after the movie was released.

Foxtrot you read my mind! I noticed those scenes too! And came to the same conclusion. I know his teeth look better (much), but Max's brace is gone too (I know Uncle that's another thread and you seem to have found a possible explanation). But as for him heading out and making it to where ever with the others from RW, this has been a few more years right? Maybe something happened and he moved on again (after getting some dental work lol). Or maybe this was a stop along the way before the narration in MMRW?? Maybe he and the blond got cut off from the rest, had a kid (and some dentistry) she died, he took up raising the boy. I also don't get that the two characters are that much different in their actions as commented by Mr. natural "And the Gyro Captain was a "nice" guy. Jedediah is an amoral opportunist" I think Gyro was well on his way to being an "amoral opportunist" in MMRW. If the snake would have gotten Max, either Gyro or Jedediah would have taken advantage of the situation in the same way. Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten, sleep or be slept with "
wait, sorry that last one doesn't make that much sense does it". Anyway to end my rambling, My vote is they are the same guy.
Sorry to jump on the drudging up old thread band wagon but for some of us newer guys it ain't so new

Very good guys. Yes, the scenes and dialogue you mention are EXACTLY why I think its the same guy. When Gyro went with the "tribe" to the north, who says he stayed there? At the end of MM2, the narrator (the Feral Kid) says "in the fullness of time, *I* became the leader. Well, if the Feral Kid can learn English, manners and civilized behavior, why couldnt Gyro find and learn to use a toothbrush upon their arrival in the North? Why do we have to assume that Gyro stayed on as the leader until his death of old age or whatever. To me it makes perfect sense that he went to the North, hung out, humped the blonde chick, they had a kid and eventually he moved on for reasons unknown.
