Wasteland Vacation - Vehicle suggestions?

Post by LifetapStudios »

Hey there! I'm the developer behind Wastehaven, an upcoming 1970s themed wasteland indie game which entails a long, procedurally generated road trip through a dangerous wasteland. I'm wanting to get suggestions from some fellow mad max fans as to which vehicles they think would be cool to see. I'm going for a slightly more stock look because these vehicles you drive are ones you stumble across in the wasteland.

Here's just a few I have so far... The red one takes inspiration from an 71 mustang, the camper takes from 60s winnebago, the yellow a 1950s f1 ford truck, and the green sedan inspired from a 1950 oldsmobile.

I'm thinking about adding a 1960 Cadillac, a 1930s ratrod, maybe even bikes. Let me know if you have any vehicle suggestions ranging from 1930-1975!

Welcome!

Since you're in a Mad Max forum the obvious addition to your game would be Australian Falcons. XA, XB, XC. Holdens are cool too I guess haha

Rigs based on R600 Coolpower Mack, utes for sure.

As for specific models:
1973 XB Falcon Hardtop
Holden Monaro HQ
Holden FJ Ute
Ford 150 pickup
Valiant Charger
At last the Vermin had inherited the Earth

Yeah I was thinking of having a Black Falcon look-alike as a rare easter egg in the game. Perhaps a holden sandman ^_^ I didn't even consider a ute, but that's totally a good idea! Flatbed holdens also look pretty cool! I'd love to add a large semi/mac... I'd have to rework some some of the car physics but it's totally do-able :)

Cars that might be good inspiration that are solid '70s or earlier:
1968 onward Austin Landcrab
AMC AMX
Morris Minor
Reliant Scimitar (1970s version)
Oldsmobile Toronado
Chrysler Charger
Lamborghini Countach
1958 Plymouth Fury
1962 Plymouth Fury (looks completely different)
1971 Plymouth Roadrunner

For trucks, stuff like a 1965 BMC FG or Kanyon, '60s Fiat 600T, Mk1 Transit ... those are all pretty distinct.

Good luck with your project, I'm not sure about the body flexing around but you've gotta walk your own path sometimes

Thanks for the suggestions Turbofurball! Some of these are absolute winners! I'll reference this list when I schedule the next batch of vehicles to make. I particularly liked the unique shape of the BMC FG. It looks like something out of Fallout. The chassis flexing is something I can easily tone down if people don't like it. I'm aiming for a slightly toon-ish style, thus the flex.

If you wanted to check out ways cartoons try to do flexing cars have a look at Wacky Races, it might help if you wanted to tweak how they react

Anyway, good luck again ;)

More suggestions:

-Ford F-series pickup trucks from the time periods you're looking for
-Triumph GT6 MkII
-Datsun 1200
-Corvette Stingray
-Plymouth Duster/Fury/Satellite
-Dodge Charger/Demon
-Pontiac Tempest/GTO
-Chevrolet Suburban
-Mercedes 240D/300D
-Dodge Ram Charger
-Opel GT
-Volkswagen Beetle
-various VW Beetle based kit cars like the Vokaro, Avenger, Humbug, Aztec, Bradley GT, Baja Bug, ect.
-Subaru 360
-Buick Roadmaster
-Porsche 550 Spyder

Will there be the ability to do engine swaps and car parts upgrades? I always thought it would be cool if a game of this sort did a more realistic take on this with power/torque vs rpm curves for all the various engines, vs. the nonsensical upgrade system of the Mad Max PS4 game. With gasoline being scarce, maybe the player could swap in a diesel engine to run on a wider variety of "fuel"(old mechanical injection diesels can often be run off of diesel alternatives like waste vegetable oil, kerosene, and brake fluid or transmission fluid), or swap in larger gasoline engines for more performance. Or do gearing swaps to help performance and/or efficiency, or switch from an automatic to a manual transmission.

What is your physics engine like? Does it account for things like torque vs rpm curves, mass, rolling resistance, wind resistance, suspension dampening and bound/rebound, tire traction limits, gearing, or is it more cartoony? I've noticed almost everyone who makes a game involving cars has made it cartoony, especially if it is a non-racing game, which IMO is to a game's detriment. I can't stand playing GTA5 because it is so cartoony, and the Mad Max game on the PS4 could have been soooo much more if it allowed you to mix and match parts from cars(or cars modeled after real cars) and build your own Frankenstein mobile with a sense of realism for how it would perform and function, which would have provided more incentive for exploration, scrounging and scavenging due to the inevitable rarity of certain vehicles and parts in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
