I can't believe it. 24 years of internet fandom or so, and we never investigated on the real nature of the Mad Max 2 prologue footage.
Wondering if they will manage to improve its quality (and HOW) once they will transfer the movie on 4K/UHD.

It's been researched.
The prologue is a combination of archive footage/news reel shot in 4:3, not on 35mm. It's mixed with leftover footage from Mad Max cropped down to 4:3. The archive footage was re-used in a TV series called The Dismissal also directed by George Miller, check out the first episode.
The entire sequence was inspired by newsreels playing at cinemas.

4:3 doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been shot on 35mm or at least 16mm. It's just the aspect ratio.
Surely, the footage culled from "Mad Max" has been edited from 35mm film.

All the "footage" come from Cinesound Movietone. I spent hours in their archives to find as much as I could from the MM2 footage
