What happened to Mel's accent?

Post by Nefarious »

I can't help but notice, in Mel's early films, you could distinctly hear his Austrailian accent, but in his later films and even interviews, it doesn't seem to be there anymore, at least not as distict.

My understanding is he's from the US originally, but his dad moved him and his brother and family to Oz to avoid his brother going to Nam.

Even as a transplanted Yank, it is not uncommon if one is in a foreign land for enough time to develop a different accent - especially if at a young enough age. Anyway, those in Oz claim him as one of their own.

I've lived all over the USA and find that even with myself I tend to speak differently and use different regional terms depending on where I am.

Steve

He probably grew out of it, sort of a reverse accent. if you were an american that lived in australia for 20 years you might get an accent.

Born in Peekskill (i think thats how you spell it) New York on Jan. 3 1956, his family did move to oz when he was I think about 12 to avoid his brother being drafted to Nam.

Similarly, to all you Americans who may read this, how does Greg Norman's accent sound to you? To an Australian, it sounds like he's fighting a losing battle to not sound American.
