Interceptor Build - for the old timers...

Hi all,

It's been a bit quiet here.

Been working on a new interceptor for near a year now and thought this would be a good time to introduce the journey, if I was ever going to.

She’s nearly finished and we finally tried turning the key this week for the first time, bringing her to life. Bit like flicking the switch on Frankenstein perhaps, being all wired up to monitor the vital signs, but you still don’t know exactly what was going to happen…

Since this is Mad Max and not (Mad Max 2 which was filmed in sequence.) I’m going back to the beginning. Call it the Editors or Directors cut perhaps. Haven’t had word on the exact engine condition anyway...

Got the idea for a build from a magazine article, years ago, about some guys building MM replicas in W.A… assumed Grant and Gordon.

Watched a couple of cars sell recently, not that I was prepared to spend that much! (They’re in Australian Dollars.)

I have no reason to doubt:

- The original November 1973 Falcon XB GT was bought new in New South Wales with the rego of GPV-996.

- In 1975 the vehicle became Victorian rego IFE-509.
During filming MM1, circa 1977 in Victoria, the vehicle was filmed on public roads and also transported cast and crew. Therefore it had to retain registration.

- A few years after MM2, Bob Fursenko got it back on the road acquiring rego 5188 TA (courtesy Mad Max Museum, Silverton)

Here's an October 1973 XB GT Coupe on Ebay yesterday in need of restoration. Was advertised for $65,000 AUD prior.

I guess I wouldn't have got far converting an XB GT Coupe since my full budget was around 50 to 60K. At a guess I wouldn't have been too popular with some either...

Mine's a Falcon 500 perhaps GS ? Cost $29,000- AUD
It had everything GT except: Tramp Rods, Rear discs with larger bearings, top of door trims, curved type arm rests, GT seats, vinyl around glove box, GT door cards and a GT compliance plate.

Painted over the paint in the engine bay in Black 2 pack gloss.
It's the only place I feel we took a short cut, by not stripping the paint off first... However, many others had done it that way I've noticed.

Found two providers advertising Interceptor kits. One was from Mad Max Cars.
