Jodorowsky's Dune

Post by Taipan »

An awesome documentary about the original movie version of Dune that never came to be.
Here's the trailer:

The whole documentary is out on Blu Ray, I highly recommend it.

I'm a fan of the original Dune that was made in 1984. Love the story and love the visual artwork of that movie.

But now I see this video with the artwork as it otherwise would have been :o That was amazing. As I understand it, they used the same artist who also designed the Alien. But also without revealing that, you will notice it. I love that kind of artwork.
It is a real shame this movie was never made.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

As I understand it, they used the same artist who also designed the Alien.
In fact, after Jodo's Dune collapsed, Dan O'Bannon called back the graphic team he created for Alien.

There are still a lot of designs from the original Dune that pop up even today.

For example, Prometheus uses HR Giger's design from Dune:

Jodorowsky's Dune was a very ambitious project that has its fingerprints all over sci-fi as we know it. Alien, Prometheus, Blade Runner, Matrix, you name it.

Need to see this docu... been meaning to. I'll track it down as this thread just reminded me.

The Dune movie's an oddity and a guilty pleasure for me. The book is great, but it didn't quite work as a movie to have all those internal monologues imo, but who knows how else that could have been done. The aesthetic is just so strange (even despite Giger designs and Salvador Dali being dropped... did I read that right lol). And the ending is tragically hilarious for me... I can't help but burst out laughing at the Baron. But I also really love the movie, too. Something about it... maybe just its boldness in trying to capture the scope of the book and some of those early steampunkish designs going all out.

Sure would love to see that "script" one day.
Duneinfo.com has an article about some guy who bought an alleged version of it on ebay.

Jodorosky denied its authenticity.
But after scrutinizing whats been revealed by the buyer, they think its probably real.
