“The Lord of the Rings” and “Mad Max” films will be adapted into two new mobile games that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Kabam will co-publish.
WBIE and Kabam already have scored with the hit mobile game “The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth,” which has earned more than $100 million for the studio from in-game purchases in its first year on devices.
While no dates were given for the release of the new games, WB will unspool “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” on Dec. 17, and “Mad Max: Fury Road” on May 15, 2015.
Kabam’s mobile games will help promote those films and keep fans engaged outside of the multiplex while putting more coin into the pockets of the studios.
“WBIE has been an amazing partner, and we look forward to building on our previous success with these strong franchises,” said Kabam chief operating officer Kent Wakeford. “Marquee brands like ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Mad Max’ are perfect for the deeply immersive and fun mobile games Kabam creates.”
San Francisco-based Kabam also has produced “The Godfather” game for Paramount and Universal’s “Fast & Furious” games, both hits, and was recently tapped by Lionsgate to produce a “Hunger Games” role-playing, card-collection title for smartphones and tablets.
Kabam’s homegrown franchises “Kingdoms of Camelot” and “Dragons of Atlantis” have earned more than $100 million each.
The company said it generated more than $360 million in revenue in 2013, up 100% over 2012.
Warner Bros. is an investor in Kabam along with MGM.
“Kabam’s demonstrated expertise is very impressive, and extending our partnership with their team will help both companies achieve continued success,” said WBIE executive VP of publishing operations David Haddad. “Building two new mobile games based on well-known ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Mad Max’ brands is a strategic part of our growth as the appetite for digital content continues to grow.”
