Mad Max Coming to Comic-Con

July 3, 2013

Outside Comic Con has found some interesting news on an awesome offsite and something we thing might potentially make its way into Hall H on Saturday.

Per a Craigslist ad, Petco Park will play host to a “toxic wasteland” to promote the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road remake, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. The ad is looking for two characters to play an “Enemy Boss” (big and muscular, mean) and “Enemy Scavenger” (funky hair type, tattoos and face paint).

The hours for the assignment were also posted. These aren’t necessarily the hours of operation for attendees, but it does give indication this will be an all-day event, Thursday through Sunday.

What’s also interesting is the recent departure of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug from Warner Bros. Hall H panel lineup has undoubtedly left a gap which Mad Max: Fury Road would fill nicely. It is also safe to assume that with Warner Bros. getting behind this newest entry in the beloved action franchise with a big offsite event, it probably make sense to expect a presentation during the studio’s panel as well.

Excited about seeing Mad Max at Comic-Con? Let us know in the comments.

So, is it getting a full panel? Usually that would mean the director and star(s) would be present (or at least present via a video feed). Footage would likely be shown as well, but would only be seen by those present. At least that's how it's gone down for previous movies like Prometheus.

*Edited for thread title change*

Maybe we'll finally have an official release date through that SDCC event :)

Oh man Bio, you've probably made my day with this news!!!

I could see the extras needed being for the game but I remember they do that stuff for the movies too like the actor and extras Fox hired to be an Engineer and walked around the con promoting the Blu-Ray for Prometheus.

The big news could the possibility of the panel since it'd mean the first footage will be shown, though we never see it I'm sure a cam version will leak, and maybe some of the stars will be in attendance.

Just a heads up but we should find out tomorrow afternoon if WB will have a Fury Road panel as the SDCC website has been posting the full days schedule for the event with Thursday being put up yesterday and Friday's schedule today. It's known that WB will be taking over the big Hall H on Saturday but none of their panels have been revealed, so some possibilities could be All You Need Is Kill with Tom Cruise or the 300 sequel and also still leave room for Fury Road as Bio posted there won't be a Hobbit panel this year like 2012.

EDIT: I tried scooping around and even asked Elmayimbe who scores a lot of scoops for LatinoReview and said he knew what WB/Legendary were planning for the Godzilla panel at SDCC so figured he might know if FURY ROAD will be there. He didn't reply per se but just retweeted my tweet....possibly a yes?

Mad Max will NOT have a panel at Hall H on July 20 (at least, it isn't in the official schedule). Instead, WB will be presenting Godzilla, Seventh Son, 300: Rise of an Empire, Gravity and the LEGO movie.

Well...crap if thats no disappointing. :(

If thats truly the case and WB doesn't present anything Fury Road related then I believe the film is probably off the cards for 2014 and most likely the 2015 date that was mentioned is true. Comic Con is such a huge event and the perfect venue to promote the film that if it was planned to be a major 2014 release then WB would have a panel.

I'd imagine then that the Petco Park thing probably isn't even related to WB or Mad Max.

EDIT: I guess the only thing that might be a positive and looking at last year's schedule is that Fury Road could be a surprise panel. Last year's schedule revealed WB's panel to be comprised of Pacific Rim, Man of Steel and The Hobbit but had a surprise showing for Godzilla including concept footage given just prior to comic con WB announced they were making a movie. So some hope still left...

I disagree. In fact, I'm even more convinced that it'll be released in the Fall of 2014. Aside from the fact that WB has a giant hole to fill between August and November of next year, notice how every movie getting a panel this year has a release date prior to next years SDCC. IOW, tentpole movies being released within a year following SDCC 2015 will probably get a panel next July. I believe that will be the case for Mad Max.

As for 2015, that's expected to be a giant year blockbuster-wise (Star Wars, Avengers 2, etc). I'm afraid (and probably WB is too) that Mad Max would get overshadowed.

Yes, there could still be something come July 20. Maybe not a panel. Perhaps a tease of some sort. That would be enough for me. Something is better than nothing.

Absolutely. Heck give me a poster and I'll be happy!

Still could get a surprise showing though. Godzilla got one last year when it's not scheduled for release till May 2014 and now has another, bigger, panel this year. I noticed All You Need Is Kill is missing too.

Of course other sites are picking up on the Petco Park craigslist ad and seemingly thinking it'll be a separate interactive promo for Fury Road but I guess we'll have to wait 2 weeks and see what happens.

Not quite sure how this fits in with WB's panel on Saturday but the Comic Con issue of Entertainment Weekly, now hitting subscribers and newsstands, features All You Need is Kill including a new still from the movie which is a WB production and not announced for their panel.

Could the film be making a surprise showing at the panel and if so what about Fury Road? Well in about 8 days we'll find out. There still seems to be no word on what exactly the Petco Park thing is for....
