I use Krylon Ruddy Brown primer for that.

you can also mix in a little white primer with the ruddy brown to get different dirt shades.

I didn't use paint I used real dirt and just mixed it with water and applied with different sized brushes. One the mixture dried on the model I took small brushes and brushed away what I didn't want or like. I used dirt from my backyard but it wasn't red enough. So I went to my local baseball field and scooped up some red clay dirt that they use on the infield.

Your best bet is to learn to mix paint colors until you get a result you like. A combination of yellow, red, white and black should be all you need to get there. Do a bit of experimentation with small amounts and figure out what works. I usually start with an orange mixed from the yellow and red, then add more of the colors or combinations of them as needed.
I find that it looks very fake and unnatural if just one shade is used. Layering different shades (lighter highlights over darker base) to provide subtle variation works best.
Good luck!

There is a weathering kit kickin around in some model stores, it contains MUD, RUST, OIL, COAL etc. about 6 different colours and i found RUST was the best for the MAD MAX 2 interceptor dust, it's just the right tinge of broken hill orange

i used a weathering kit from Lifecolor, which is a collection of matt (no gloss) acrylic paints in various colours.

I also mixed these colours with silver or black to detail up the chassis components

On a real car, you can use poster paints. You can get bigger bottles, and its fairly inexpensive. After you mix the colors, add a few drops of dishsoap for easier cleanup/removal.
