News on the Fury Road : "The Wasteland" & "Furiosa"

Just because the characters in a movie state there's nothing out there doesn't make it so in the creator's mind. The good thing about a universe like the one in Mad Max is it's a pretty open canvas. If the writers want him to stumble upon some map or rumor of something more than desert, that's no issue at all - especially now the franchise has moved so much closer to fantasy.

Max was just referring to a specific direction and a supposedly "vanished" ocean.

Actress Joy Smithers, who played one of the Vuvalini, was on an Australian TV show and said she had read the script to the Mad Max sequel. She said they (the Vuvalini) were in it and Megan Gale's character The Valkyrie is a child in it. Joy said it's a prequel, so it sounds like this is the alternative Furiosa origin story Miller was/is developing. Mad Max talks starts at 5:25 mark.

But wait a minute, this is really odd. A prequel with the Vuvalini indicates Furiosa's backstory again, but wasn't The Wasteland supposed to be about Max? AFAIK the script and novel-soon-to-be-script were both centered around Max, Furiosa wasn't supposed to be making a come back at all. What business does Max have with the Vuvalini now, and in a prequel? Flashback sequence of sorts maybe? This is really weird.

Mad Miller is going to be the sequel's name if she just spoiled it.

I'm not really pushed on a prequel. One of the great things about Fury Road is how we are thrown into the world without being spoon fed its history and character's back story. We don't need to know why Furiosa lost her arm or what the Green Place used to look like.

This has to be Mad Max: Furiosa - remember all the talk about two movies being made back-to-back, sometime in 2012 I guess. And all that rumors about Furiosa Anime?
Coincidentally, Furiosa's origin story was completelly omitted from the comics, so there might be some weight to it.

If anything, this has the chance to get developed as an animated feature, or perhaps a spin-off if WB are feeling really confident.
But I hope Miller would never allow for a spin-off to water down the franchise (like marvel and DC do nowadays).

And of course, please do proper sequel instead. New everything, except Max.

Then again, maybe it's a direct sequel, with flashback sequences. Lame, but still better than Max-less spin-off.

What if it is the beginning of an expended film universe? It happens with Transformers, Star Wars. Maybe we'll have several films, official Mad Max movies and spin-off also? I can't imagine the next Mad Max movie directed by George Miller will be Max-less.

Joy may have been given the original prequel script to read to get some background on her character. This may have been before some form of merging/massaging of the scripts to form the first film.

WB are certainly backed into a political corner right now; they can't turn their back on Max but they need a Furiosa too, in some form. Plus they have set Max up for a prequel with his flashbacks.

What they might do is inject Max into the same plot and story of the Furiosa script but switch the characters around so it fits with what they have now. They are going to need a new female protag, that could be a child/teenager originally based on a young Furiosa.

Just because a prequel could be make doesn't mean that will explain any more about the world. If anything it could only add to the mystery.

So personally, fingers crossed for a Mad Max prequel with the Interceptor (maybe with Max as a cop), teaming up or fighting for the survival of a girl (maybe Glory). Perhaps with some tarmac chases in world more remnant of civilisation.
