IMHO we're dealing with an alternate continuity featuring an alternate Max. As simple as that.

Most likely firearms training before the shoot. Could also be one of the weapons Max uses as there doesn't seem to be as big of limit on firearms as the previous films given the amount of mounted machine guns seen on the vehicles.

Megan Gale was boasting about how she could now fire a semi automatic weapon after her role in Fury Road , should be interesting ......

:/
Hopefully there aren't any shooting scenes in Fury Road. One of the key things about Mad Max movies to me is very sparse ammunition. Humungus had used bullets very carefully, Max was walking around with an empty gun most of the time till that old woman in the Compound gave him some shells she's been saving up. Makes things a bit more realistic.

I wouldn't get your hopes up, another example is that stuntman tweeted during the shoot how he got burned by multiple shell casings from a mounted machine gun on a vehicle during a scene. For better or for worse it seems we'll be seeing a lot more bullets and firearms going off than the previous films.

I noticed Tom Hardy's tattoos. I hope this new Max isn't 'inked'. That's the sort of thing you'd see if Rob Zombie was directing it.
