For instance, in MM2 instead of staying with the group, he leaves, and then he gets run off the road and loses everything. Colossally bad decisions, both thought out and reactionary. In MM3 he is subject to ambush at the beginning, and loses everything to theft.
Nice post.

I had the "privilege" of seeing the real ex-military guy reacting to loud firecracker noise by ducking and reaching for non existent sidearm. Talk about the epic wtf moment in everybody else - you could see people wishing to break out laughing but then tought " oh fck, better not!" :P
Max was still fairly young and not some veteran cop who'd done it all. I still stand by my original comment, he was shot full of adrenaline and panicked.

I agree about the human thing. He's also subject to a lot of bad luck which is relatable.

But he is way more effective as a driver. But it may be he learned his driving before he joined the police, or was just naturally talented. And once he was "on dry land" so to speak, he panicked. So your theory works too.

Maybe his mad driving skills were compensation for his lousy shooting? After all, he only ever uses shotguns. 8-)

Maybe Max was in a state of panic because he was shot and didn't think about using the revolver but insteads tries to grab the shotgun. It's a common thing to happen. People that are in panic (danger) won't always do the most logical thing.
A logical reply finally..

Not to mention why would you want to grab a pistol in a holster (which means undoing the holster clip) and then firing a single bullet at a moving target while in great pain and expecting to be able to aim properly? Come on really? Shot gun... many pellets, bigger chance of hitting target.
Not quite logical in case of trained shooters. First thing they will do in case of panic is pullout the gun and spray lead in direction of threat. If primary gun is unavailable, reach for secondary. If secondary is unavailable, cover. Max did nothing of that. I stll call filmmaking mistake.

I had the "privilege" of seeing the real ex-military guy reacting...
You don't get out much do you...? :?

I'm also a combat veteran, and if startled by perceived gunfire I would react similarly - duck, move, take cover, reach for primary or secondary.... Nothing to do with PTSD (which I do not have). It's training and reaction. Just like a good driver will swerve instinctively to avoid a hazard in the road without any actual thought, just reaction.

Having been very well trained in firearms, and trained countless others, I can say that Max's reaction was totally reasonable for the reasons I've already stated. He made an error in judgment and that can and does happen. Ever watch real gunfights and shootouts... it's not like the movies. People do unexplainable things when they have tunnel vision in life and death situations.

The bigger issue really is the odd scene setup, because it is nearly implausible and borderline impossible. Where are these bikers hiding, considering he just drove past them to get to his position... and that shot with the snub revolver at that range from a seated unsupported position is one of the most unlikely shots in movie history. Given that it is among the most awesome and necessary scenes in the movie, it's a shame the setup was so lousy because the action and results are so awesome. It could have been fixed by building a small shack or other concealment and having them step out with a hunting rifle... simple fix and infinitely more reasonable. Oh well, still and A+ movie for me in spite of that nit-picking.

No I don't. But there was a time In my childhood when I was supposed to go out and live a life ... but was unable to... Because my home place was subject to organized military wrath and I was just an untrained civilian kid hiding in the basement. Imagine how many times I wished I had this magic huge boomerang that could not only cut fingers, but also take down planes and sink warships.

So please excuse me if I developed slight gut reaction and have humorous way of dealing with agression and have lack respect for "trained proffesionals" who "do their job" miles away from their home and loved ones. I was their job once and didn't like it. And nobody ever asked me anything about ptsd either.

To be slightly on-topic.. I've actually seen and interacted with the Toecutters, Humongouses, Papagallos, Gooses and Fifis of this world.... Max, I hope he was out there somewhere, but never met him.
And I've been through real "prohibited zones" too, now how cool is that!

Now back to regular schedule...

in MM1, as max is coming up behind the bikes in the first encounter with them, the scene is across the roof and the camera wobbles around a bit and you can see in the back window. It looks like a cameraman sitting in the passenger seat with his arms holding the camera.
