Boxoffice.com currently has MMFR tracking @ $38 million, well behind Pitch Perfect 2 @ $45 million on opening day weekend. With Avengers 2 still going strong, MMFR looks to open in 3rd place domestically, with a cume that will top off at about $125 million.

I imagine WB will be looking for the international box office to pick up the slack.
That's not good box office business for a movie that's cost north of $150 mil, although I'm not disagreeing with it. $38 mil and then keep halving that every weekend following is how this usually works. Heading into the summer now, every Friday is fresh competition. Max is going to have his work cut out for him to make magic numbers.
Unless it's unlike any other movie out there, and grows legs from word of mouth. Very difficult for me to look at this totally objectively (I'm a little bit of a Mad Max fan), but every time I see something new the whole film just looks bigger and better, and if the completed film is bigger than the sum of its parts, this should be huge. I'm not expecting it to out-do Avengers, but I'd have to be thinking Fury Road is going to be up there doing some pretty decent box office at this point.

I would hope so too, Peter, don't get me wrong. I want this thing to do gangbusters but my biggest fear after the rough cut last summer was that it IS unlike every other summer blockbuster out there and that, sadly, may come back to bite it on the arse. It's a weird movie from the top to the bottom. Probably the weirdest and quirkiest big-budget movie I've sat through. Unfortunately, that means it's greatest appeal is going to be to a niche audience who appreciate those sensibilities. How it plays in the middle of America is quite another thing.

The R-rating is also going to keep the prime demographic out of the equation. Teens are currently sending Fast and Furious 7 towards one of the highest box office grosses in cinema history. FR's not going to have that kinda help.

Blackmocco, I hope you'll write us a post to report all the differences you spotted between the movie you saw and the one you're going to see ! :)

(and you didn't tell me about the speed of some scenes, it was like that when you saw it ?)

Dang. Almost a year ago now and to be honest, my brain was exploding at every new visual so I hope I'll remember. There's a shot of one of the Five Wives holding the little music box in one of the trailers and I have no memory of that from my screening. That made me think there's going to be plenty of stuff I just couldn't handle at the time. The movie's a complete sensory overload first time you see it.

My biggest question is going to be about the R-rating and whether they've thrown in some mayhem that wasn't in my screening (which was PG-13).

I'm pretty sure some of it's sped up for the sake of the trailer but I remember that chase scene being pretty quirky, with a lot of fast cuts, so don't be surprised if it's like that in the finished movie. There's nothing conventional about anything in this movie.

Let me clarify that: I remember that chase through the Citadel being pretty quirky but I'm pretty sure most of the car stuff is real time. Those shots of the car war party long shot zoom-cuts are like that for the trailer but not like that in the movie itself.

My only interest in box office is the potential for sequels. I think this movie will do much better in the international market than it will domestically, and that might be enough for WB. Case in point, Pacific Rim. That movie is getting a sequel even though it reportedly cost $190 million to make, but only grossed $101 million domestically. However, it made more than triple that overseas, and I expect MMFR to do at least the same.

And given that the sequel's script is ready to shoot, the generous Australian tax breaks, favorable US/AUS exchange rates and WB's desperate need for franchises, a sequel is probably inevitable.

All studios do it though with big budget releases. Again look at The Avengers and the clips they releases. The only irregularity I see is how all the clips, interview and b-roll footage was dumped on Youtube at the same time which makes me think they put the files on the PR portal all at once by accident and outlets grabbed them and why they're not on any of the WB YouTube pages. I mean these are the clips you'll see screened on talk shows and whatnot.

Fully agree on the BO and overseas. The Mad Max franchise has always been bigger outside the US so I'd expect it to do much better and nowadays studios are more concerned and interested in overseas BO than domestic.

500-600 millions worldwide and we'll get the sequel. Screw the American box office... :!: :!: :!:

Mad Max is still absolutely HUGE in Europe. The legacy of the original trilogy is still strong among adult population. I presume it will have "long legs" in Europe among the 25-45 age group. And being released before the summer is a bonus too, as in many parts of Europe, summer is not a movie-going season at all.
And i guess, Australia is obviously special in this case.
Also, don't underestimate the potential of digital and DVD sales afterwards, tv rights etc.

What worries me is if it does TOO WELL and they start getting into bigger-better-faster mentality for sequel(s) - Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises were ruined by this.

This is a very valid concern because Miller's attitude towards this franchise was always about upping the ante, revisiting old ideas and updating them with more budget and flair. What's comforting however, is that Miller doesn't seem to have the need to branch off into the fantasy world and knows when to stop. The 'Cow Car' stunt comes to mind. And no matter how crazy everything looks, there's a reason for it and is fairly rooted in common sense.
