Polygon also dinged it for not having Furiosa in it. I mean opinions and all but thats not what everyone is saying.
Other reviews are ranging from 7 to 10s so it's a mixed reception seemingly based on how much you like the source material. Otherwise I've read nothing but positive impressions from people that have the actual retail game.
Also yeah I doubt Miller would have any interest in the game when at the time he was asked he was still working on finishing Fury Road. lol He obviously had some interest in the project since he was there at the genesis of it.

Kotaku's review of Mad Max gives the game a low rating. ("Should you play this game? No.")

I've been playing for several hours and it's incredible. Steam reviews are overwhelmingly positive and deservedly so. If you like Just Cause 2 but you want more emphasis on car combat, Mad Max delivers. For some people this kind of game will never click. The freedom do to whatever you want? How dare they! The only consequence for mistakes is a glorious death. If you want a linear guided overblown and over acted "epic" story look elsewhere. This is as much a game first as Fury Road is an action movie.
Technically, Mad Max is one of the most optimized games out there. I'm running everything maxed out on 4k with SweetFX and the frame rate is buttery smooth. No hitches, crashes, glitches, and loading is very fast. Although my rig is far beyond the average with a Titan X gpu and 16GB of ram. Everyone is reporting how well it runs on various systems. If you meet the requirements don't be afraid to jump in.

honestly I am not surprised they gave it a low score. these are people who promote Anita Sarkeesian uncritically. I bring it up not to so much shame them but to illistrate that this game was and is rated on a scale of how the game might make women look on the assumption that women get their self esteem from video games. I could go into more but you get the idea. they were never going to like this game and tend to be rather biased.

Sorry, but I can't take both Kotaku's and Polygon's reviews seriously, I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore but I've been brought up reading TONS of magazines and reviews over many years and I have a pretty good idea what a good and non-biased review is. When Polygon states that:
After the progressive characterization of this summer's excellent Mad Max: Fury Road, the game's treatment of its few women is especially disappointing. The closest thing Mad Max has to a female lead, a woman not coincidentally named Hope, is a concubine for the villain and a love interest for Max. Her sole purpose in the plot is to make the bad guys more evil and provide motivation for the hero to fight. She's a damsel in distress stereotype, and it's more disheartening after having seen such a great example of the opposite in theaters just a few months ago.
...then we're further from a review and closer to their agenda of universal 'political correctness' in video games, which in itself is fucking moronic. Who's the victim now because women aren't represented equally to Max in this game? They honestly expect developers to abandon all plot ideas and cater towards those precious little offended snowflakes and their feelings. Fuck them. Those who are offended by this must think it gives them certain rights. It doesn't, nor does it justify lowering the score - that's just poor journalism. Might as well call PETA because KUMA gets the living shit beaten out him in Tekken.
Sorry, I had to go on a tangent here because the state of current reviews is absolutely atrocious. And it's not the first time Polygon lowered scores because they want to go on PC crusades, Bayonetta 2 was called sexist, The Witcher 3 was racist and misogynistic and of course the latest MGS took a hit too. My guess is that those reviewers migrated from Tumblr, since - you know, nobody pays them to be professionally offended over there.
I'm done.

i'm done taking those websites reviews seriously ages ago, what matters is user reviews or the word from people at the forums.

i've never taken game reviews literally. the social justice crusade was the final nail in the coffin.
it's subjective. there's one way for you to know a game sucks and that is for you to play it. aliens colonial marines gets a HUGE negative from gamers, but i really enjoyed the hell out of it. so whatever.

I'll say that after spending a few hours with this game that I'm more happy than a pig in shit.
The atmosphere and world created literally transports you to the Wasteland and immerses you. All the little details like heat rising from the hood of your car or the engine clicking when you're out of the car. Or how about if you take a big enough fall or drop Max will buckle on the landing and limp away for a few steps on his left leg due to his bad knee.
I'm on PS4 and the visuals are stunning and I've been spending far too much time in Capture mode taking photos and exploring the landscape. lol

For those who enjoy a good podcast of gameplay. I have to recommend YOGSCAST Hannah, who will be covering the Mad Max game on her page. Here is the first episode posted yesterday. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
