That source may have been dodgy, but their original source is pretty legit. The Feb 6 issue of the trade publication "Production Weekly" lists "Mad Max: The Wasteland" as having a production start date this fall. While it's subscription only, the movie title is listed on the front page.

This would indicate to me that things are starting to move behind the scenes.

Just going to clarify that Production Weekly isn’t a legitimate source and have been wrong on numerous times so I wouldn’t put too much stock into what they list.

Jeff Sneider of Collider.com heard a rumor about MM5 but urged everyone to take it with a grain of salt as he wasn't able to get confirmation from a 2nd source. Have a listen.

What I dont like hearing is that Jeff thinks MM5 will be a Furiosa prequel without Theron or (presumably) Hardy. That said, there's a big push for female centric action movies in Hollywood these days, so I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be true.

Mad Max: Furiosa is a prequel that spans over many years of Furiosa's origin story - that much I know. So it's safe to assume a few female actresses will be cast to play Furiosa depending on what age she is in that movie.
In another interivew Miller mentioned that there is a possibility that Max will have a short cameo in this movie so we might see Tom Hardy and if we see him I don't see a reason we wouldn't see Charlize Theron as well.

I've heard from Mark Sexton that they're gearing up to make Furiosa a few weeks ago, so I think that is indeed the next Mad Max installment in the making and sure as hell it's going to piss off a lot of people who cry 'Hollywood PC culture" and all that. All we should really care about if it's going to be a good movie or not. There's still another Max story to be told, let's not forget about that.

I'm excited! From what I've heard the story has epic potential to flesh out the world and characters of Fury Road. People will complain that its a Furiosa film and not a Max centric one but I think its time to branch out. Maybe George will buckle back down straight away and get the Max prequel out.

I am surprised this one is being made first. I hope they still have the needed cars and costumes from Fury Road. Either way wake me up in 2024 when it's out.

Maybe the Furiosa film has more latitude to share the high-level film making work and ease the burden on Miller, after all he said FR was exhausting to make and that was, what, 6 years ago now?

Fab news that the wheels are starting to turn on *something* though, it'll be interesting if it's a completely different kind of film just made in the same world.

I have mixed feelings. Although I'm glad to see Miller returning to 'his' post-apocalyptic world I would rather see a Max sequel than Furiosas origin story.

I hope that the film doesn't rely completely on Furiosas past. It could easily tackle some future events, giving Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy the chance to reprise their roles…

Without giving away too much:
This 'Furiosa' film that's about to be made was originally an Anime that was supposed to be released along with Fury Road and the original Fury Road tie-in video game (not the one from 2015).
Maedo Mahira even did some preliminary concept art for it, it was around 2008-9.
For many reasons this project was dropped along with the original Mad Max video game but the script for this Anime remained and was reworked into a live-action movie now. It is essentially the same story.

I believe it's the same with The Wasteland which might be a prequel story to Fury Road that we've already seen in the prequel comic books and its non-canonical version that was in the 2015 game. But this is just my guess.

As far as this Collider podcast that sourced the info about Yahya Abdul-Mateen II making it as the main male role:

The fact that Furiosa is going to be a prequel is really not a secret so that's nothing new. But the insinuation that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is supposed to play in this movie is based literally on nothing and it's placed at the end of the podcast to make sure people listen all the way through. Collider has really bad reputation when it comes to this because it's a sinking ship.
