The trouble with these sequel or reboot discussions is that most of it is based on peoples theories and not on fact , in the relevant thread devoted to this subject yet ignored all to often is this reply from Bio

I feel like the original ‘Mad Max’ created such a vivid world, that to go back and re-imagine it and kind of replay in that sandbox sounds like fun to me.
It’s not the original ‘Mad Max.’ It’s the revamped ‘Mad Max.’

Like with Snow White And The Huntsman, there is so much potential to re-imagine that world. It’s such an interesting world and how much it still resonates today after 20 years or whatever it’s been. We’re going back to that world but this is not a prequel or sequel or anything like that.
“Tom Hardy will be playing Mad Max but this is not the Mad Max that we know from that [film]. Only Tom Hardy can do this Mad Max and my character is a brand new character as well.

I think we’ve been told is it’s not a sequel or a prequel. It’s the world of Mad Max but it’s a re-imagination.

And one from Tom Hardy....
It’s a relaunch and revisit to the world. An entire restructuring. That’s not to say that it’s not picking up or leaving off from the Mad Max you know already, but it’s a nice re-take on the entire world using the same character, depositing him in the same world but bringing him up to date by 30 years.

Of course this is all to much for some die hard fans but it's nothing new to modern film making and even some oldies like Superman , Spiderman , Batman etc and theres a new Dr Who every couple of years and people are cool with that
Tom Hardy is the new Max for 2015 and he still drives the Interceptor , I'm sure his background story will still be the same ( wife n kid killed by marauders in his early life in the MFP ) but thats it , the old trilogy is stand alone disjointed as it is by certain elements in BTD
I can't see the point in trying to determine what year it was when each film was made , the exact dates/ year are not important to the story and are never presented to the audience as such , having a guesstimate is all one can do.
The intro from MM2 uses news archive footage from WW2 and the 60's but this doesn't seem to bother anyone
