For Fury road he had only vague ideas of whether or not it was meant to be the same interceptor he crashes in MM2 RW. Basically he just wanted an iconic black interceptor as it's mythologically Max's car and serves the mythic role of the batmobile or the hero's mighty sword of Joseph's Campbell's "hero of a thousand faces". He doesn't really beat himself up how it fits anal retentive fashion into a neat sequential narrative. How it fits into the rythmns of a films action was important. It's not important in the way some people obsessed about exactly how many Delorians were in Hill Valley at any particular time in "Back to the future". Max is literally a fireside telling Myth we hear about in a dark modern communal bedtime campfire setting but under flickering projector light rather than firelight... "let me tell you about the man with the black car ".... In some people's telling of his story he loses the black car, in others he still has it... it's Mythology and really only a movie.. Think about how many huge continuity contradictions there are in religious scripture and people actually take that stuff literally . We're worrying about a definitely fictional mythical car crash..
Think about how people will sit down and watch Ben Affleck's batmobile... hey didn't Christian Bale lose his?... How can Ben Affleck have a black car again? That's the way to just relax and not worry about it, it's just the mythic weapon of a mythic dude but the falcon XB with distinctive air intake is part of the legend we love so that's harder to fuck with and stayed with the film. George just wanted the black car and whatever leap of faith required about the interceptor is less of a concern than just trying to make the movie after 10 years and make it awesome.
Wow.

One post to own them all.

Thank you.

Very, very good post but like I say why is Miller so quick to eliminate this much loved mythic weapon at the first opportunity??

On the Batman thing, I don't think the new one is meant to exist in the same fictional universe as Nolan's films; Nolan deliberately went out of the way to avoid supernatural entities and would NEVER have allowed a superman in his movies.

Stef-Man wrote:Yes, apparently, Miller doesn't give a shit about continuity questions. But maybe, I just said maybe, a continuity is possible between the four films. I just want to say that without ignite a pointless debate (don't get me wrong: pointless until the movie's released) between the pro and anti reboot thing. I just say there is a possibility that is the case. We have to actually see the movie. Maybe the reboot camp is right. Maybe not. Dunno. Right now, I think Fury Road can be seen as a reboot (I'm very open minded on this) by certain people, and also as a true sequel by others. Again we have to wait and see ;)
Sorry Stef. I know there are some out there who need this to tie-in to the previous movies and are going to do everything in their powers to try and do so but there's no possibility. I've seen a rough cut. It doesn't hook up with the previous movies and your best bet to enjoy the experience is to let go of the connection, otherwise you're going to tie yourself in knots.

The only continuity involves the visuals, in that the elements from the previous movies are all there but retooled and rebooted for the 21st century. As someone mentioned, the James Bond movies are your best way to look at all this. It's a straight up re-imagining of Max's character and the world. Even his backstory is changed somewhat. With Mel on board, this could have easily been a straight up sequel set some time after Thunderdome but it's clear Miller doesn't really care about that now, with a new actor and a chance to tell new stories.

Trouble is, it's going to be almost impossible to watch, without at least subconsciously, making or attempting to make connections

Of course FR is a reboot, no doubt about it. But there's a good chance it was a sequel back when Mel was on board, unless of course Miller would take the ultimate piss and create a re-imagining/reboot with the same actor in place.

I think it was a sequel way back when and after all the main lead swaps, adding things, removing them but keeping the core story essentially the same - Miller crated the most ambiguous reboot in the history lol

Yep, I had a lot of trouble with that after the screening. Took me a while to let go of it, to be honest. The maddening bit is knowing how this would have slotted so easily in as a straight-up sequel had Mel shown up to the party. It's obvious it was originally envisaged as a post-Thunderdome world. There are huge chunks of the movie where you picture Gibson there instead of Hardy, which is tough on poor ol' Tom. Can't wait to see it again now without any of that baggage but I predict some of you are going to be feeling weird after your first viewing.

And I'm not going to lie, I know Miller didn't want to do an 'Unforgiven'-type tale of redemption but shit man, I would have LOVED that with an older Mel. Haha!

I don't remember anything specifically tying it to Oz. Maybe that's changed since last summer though. Hardy's accent jumps around a bit. I guess the idea is it's not important where it's set but to me, Australia is as integral to MM as George Miller himself. It's not that big a deal in the finished movie, it's really not, but I liked thinking about what must be going on in the rest of the world while watching RW and Thunderdome and just like Australia's animals have evolved differently from being on an isolated continent, I always saw Max's world in the same way. Like, you know he'll live the rest of his days without ever knowing what's happened anywhere else in the world.
