Nice! Although it bummed it at first because if they were using it for a fake list then it wouldn't be showing...then I realized that was last year's list....

Reading a number of highly positive impressions from tonight's screening. One described it as "slightly unfinished" but nobody is going in to details because of NDAs save for saying how great or "kick ass" it is.

Spoke to someone who saw the movie. The viewer was unfamiliar with the original trilogy. He/she gave it an 8/10, calling it nearly a "great" action movie. A couple of things were found to be problematical. As you might have guessed, one is the flashback stuff. This viewer found it to be inadequate, though he didn't call it awkward. I can't remember if there was a voice-over by Max in the earlier screenings. If there was, it doesn't sound like it's there anymore.

Another problem was Max himself. He wasn't given much to say, character wasn't fleshed out. Viewer didn't have a problem with Furiosa being the real star, but given the title, expected a bit more from Hardy's character (who is apparently still mumbling his lines).

I have a feeling that despite the great action set pieces, the movie is going to get knocked a bit for not being Max-centric.

Just to temper expectations a bit, I had a mate there at the Alhambra screening. He said he liked it without loving it. The car stuff was exciting but he felt the movie blew its wad with the first chase sequence and never really recovered. Sounds like the screening he saw had less narration than what I saw back in June. He had a lot of concerns, mostly that the characters aren't fleshed out enough so we never really care what happens to any of them, particularly with Max himself. He had no idea what the flashbacks were about so doesn't sound like that was addressed either since last time. He gave it a 6/10 but thinks it's going to be an unholy bomb at the box office. Oy.

Another reaction
I went to the same screening. Unfortunately, Max's backstory was not dealt with at all, which I thought was an issue mainly for fans of the original films. It didn't slow down the story but I think that was the point, to give fans the same adrenaline rush they got watching the original films (particularly The Road Warrior). I think the intention was to reboot the story and create the same aura of mystery around Max and build up enthusiasm to continue the franchise. If so, they succeeded.

Charlize Theron did a great job and was one of the best characters in the movie. I didn't think she'd work, initially, so I was surprised at how well her character fit into that particular world.

The last sequence was definitely one, long adrenaline rush, one of at least three sequences that could be described as an adrenaline rush. Action junkies will definitely be satisfied.

Was every stunt practical? Not sure what you mean but I would definitely like to see some behind-the-scenes footage of how they did it without multiple injuries occurring.

I think the movie works even if you aren't familiar with the original films or character. It reminded me of seeing The Road Warrior for the first time, where you're blown away by the sheer intensity of the action as well as the world where it all takes place. It leaves you wanting to know more about Max, as well as the director's vision of a possible future.

I guess it just makes sense to have Furiosa the star instead of Max. Gotta attract the female crowd nowadays.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post here
Couldn't find my login info, though it was probably way out of date anyway.

I was at the Apr & July Burbank screenings, and the Dec 8th in Alhambra. (YES, I am hated for that; NO, I've no idea why I keep getting sent the invites)
I wrote the "non-review" back in April: Randy Does NOT Review MAD MAX FURY ROAD Advanced Screening.

To let you know:
-There were two theaters in Alhambra showing MMFR.
-RUMOR going round there was that there were two versions being shown; Studio & Director's cuts. /RUMOR
-The opening v/o was different from the last two, making things clearer to the audience.
-Sound quality was much better, allowing to hear more from the characters, which helped make the story clearer.
-There were finished opening credits, but no end credits were shown.

Hope that helps.
