Joylon..Ho Ho..

Big And bulky XB'x .. no way, you had clapped out six cylinder cars.. put some power into the engine bay and tighten the car up and they can be driven like go-carts.

Out on the race track for a thrash I have pulled hand brake turns, opposite lock power slides out'a corners, treat it like a go-cart, throw it around, slide it, generally make it piss. Excellent fun and not super difficult if you add the accelerator to the steering dynamics.

Too hard? No way, It is violence, treat it that way.. get stuck into it.. you just need power to combat the size and weight, the more power the better.

And remember people expect to see little nimble cars flicking around, you can see that any Saturday night in the city.

Look at "Top GUN", remember the power and violence of the FA 18's (is FA18 correct?), imagine that film if they used small zippy trainer jets.. Boring ..a zero.

Same with the cars put the power and sound of a road tearing snarling V8, spitting, and roaring like a pissed off bull. And the whole event comes alive.

I believe the film becomes powerful, it becomes extreme, different (for today). Beware Hollywood and its film tricks. You can watch the modern Gone in Sixty seconds and in spite of that Gorgeous Mustang ... you yawn.. digital effect here... tricks there.. another digital effect here. nothing is real, not the speed, not the stunts.. yawn. Remember the raw basic animal primeval power, That is what Kennedy -Miller conveyed. Something pre-historic. Refine the basics... stick with power and VIOLENCE.

But what ever you do next, at least in "addicted to base".. you have done it right once.

You will always have that.

Good luck anyhow..

I agree w/ Gordon. RAW POWER is what it's all about. There is already a backlash against the 'ricer' Fast n' Furious culture...

BTW, LOVED the Addicted to Base video! You were SO right in giving homage to such a cult classic.

Nobody will lynch you for not using XB's next time, but why not use the F-14 Tomcats (sorry Gordon) of the Aussie car world to communicate BASE. V-8's THROB; ricers buzz...

Jolyon,

Now that sounds good... I can't wait to see how this comes out.

Can we order Addicted to Base stuff online? Carried in the US? I think maybe I'll put a A.T.B. bumper sticker on the Gossie, LOL!

So what other videos have you done, or other types of film? What are your favorite films/influences? Just curious...

Mitch- RE: Addicted To Bass stuff available in the US. I only know of the European stockists mentioned earlier in the thread.

As for its US progress -a month back 'Addicted' was number one in the Billboard clubplay and dance chart. It's moved into the next stage- college radio so all eyes are on what it does next. I do know that V2 (US record company) dig the video and at this stage are sticking to it...

The majority of what I do is ads. And lately music videos. should give you the heads up on what my reel is like. Thanks to 'Addicted To Bass' I got to direct a car chase for a Japanese feature film called 'A Toast To Love'. We put the heroes in a convertible Saab 93 (product placement) and bad guys (my choice) a black '02 Monaro. I only had 2 days to cover the same amount of ground as 'Addicted'. But it was great fun on 35mm with a feature crew- and you'd never know I under-cranked the cameras to 12 fps to make up for the 60 kmph speed limit (very frustrating!). I had a ball though and I got to be the first to shoot the new Monaro in a chase. As the new Pontiac GTO it's Vin Diesel's car in xXx2 shooting next year. He had a 60's GTO in xXx...

In this age of bland computer generated FX, Mad Max rulez because it uses very simple composition and framing, in-camera techniques and editing to achieve a spectacular result. Miller is to classic film culture what the Wachowskis (Matrix) are to the digital age.Image Image

As promised- I finally found a minute to compress the Addicted To Bass video (UK version) in full. It's large (35Mb) but the quality looks OK. Its actually about 1/4 the size that you'd see it on TV. I will post the European edit later on this week.

I've also posted a quicktime of the EPK (electronic press kit) that features the other 2 angles of the caravan impact. This is the source of the images posted further up the thread.

I haven't quite worked out how to 'crop' out the letterbox in Final Cut Pro so you'll find them in the standar 4:3 aspect ratio.

If you have the slightest interest the page is http://www.jolyon.tv/puretone_stills.html

Scroll down to the base of the page and you'll see the two links.

Cheers- J

Yay, I've been patiently waiting since you mentioned you'd do this. Image

I guess I'll have to wait another 11 hours till I'm back on an ADSL link at work.

Thanks Jolyon!

Anyone out there know if you can turn the Addicted to Base video into a screen saver?

I hope so!
