Personally, I would have preferred a straight sequel but it looks like the scale and more futuristic approach prohibit this according to Miller himself.
I guess with the original trilogy we have all invested emotionally in the story and I was hoping that Hardy's Max would be the same character as Gibson's with a direct link to the originals.
It seems that this movie is sort of fitting into both camps in perhaps the same way as the Daniel Craig Bond movies which have rebooted the JB franchise starting with Bond's early adventures.. and yet the same M (as played by Judi Dench) as in the Brosnan movies.
Its a bit like Prometheus and JJ Abrams Trek series which although prequels, they have had to show set designs and depictions of technology way contrasting with the original movies & tv series.
Any thoughts??
I definitely was hoping for a linear story, perhaps a film bridging the gap somewhere between MM1 and MM3. That in my mind is the most interesting gap for Max. Post MM3, eh, not so interesting. But Post MM1, now that is a lot of great exploration. Continual updates of the collapse. Perhaps Max reconnects with some of the MFP folks, to try to unite, and some get killed. Max acquires his dog... We could see the BoB in all her glory for some awesome scenes...
Even if this were post MM3, and the same Max for which at least I was emotionally invested in, I would be more satisfied. But the practical reality of keeping vehicles running (on oil, gas, methane, wishful thinking) some 10-20 years after total collapse of infrastructure is nonsense. You need clean oil for lubrication. You need spark plugs. You need rubber hoses. You grease for bearings. Etc. Doesn't matter how good you scavenge or how good your mechanics are. Mechanical things ultimately fail. You need parts, supplies, and whatnot. Ultimately those run out, especially as they are hoarded, wasted, and used up and driven hard in the desert. With the apparent exhaustion of oil/gas in MM3, that story line has little room to grow. No longer are road gangs fighting for a resource that has long been exhausted. For this reason, I think that the period between MM1 and MM2, and perhaps MM2 and MM3 is really the most interesting.
But a reboot, rekilling the BoB, and rewriting history. No so much a fan of that angle. Trying to maintain an open mind, but quite difficult given the trailer.
