I don't think its a big mystery, he was talking about salts flats. They are very common, here's what wikipedia says.

"Natural salt pans or salt flats are flat expanses of ground covered with salt and other minerals, usually shining white under the Sun. They are found in deserts, and are natural formations (unlike salt evaporation ponds, which are artificial)."

We have them in Australia.

It took 2 explorers Bourke and Wills over 8 months to travel from the bottom of Australia to the top end , while they didn't have motorcycles they weren't travelling on nice highways , so to say that the group on bikes in Fury Road could travel x amount of kilometres per day is a bit of a stretch as this distance could change with weather and ground conditions , not allowing for break downs injuries , diversions etc
The statement by Furiosa " we could have enough fuel for 160 days " does not imply that the destination is 160 days away in a straight line , it just means they have x amount of fuel
The statement by Max " If you travel 160 days that way you will find nothing but salt is a response based on what he seems to know , who knows he could be bullshitting to change her mind lol
By looking at maps and saying oh if you travel in a straight line for 160 days you will end up in Timbuktu is sketchy because in reality you would be travelling in all sorts of directions when traversing across the desert regions of this country taking paths around mountain ranges , sand dunes etc
Whats to say the movie is set in Australia anyway , it could be a fictional place therefore rendering all 160 days theories invalid lol

When I read your quote, "Indeed. Characters in movies can sometimes be wrong," I immediately thought of Death Race.

Each time I hear Coach describe The Monster as having twin 30 millimeter belt-fed machine-guns my eyes roll backward. Coach's line is not correct. The Monster is armed with twin 30-caliber or 7.62mm electric rotary machine-guns.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II ground assault aircraft is armed with a 30 millimeter gun. The aircraft was built around the massive GAU-8/A 30 millimeter electric rotary automatic cannon. Each cartridge for the gun is enormous.

Everything else Ian McShane says is great therefore I enjoy the scene in spite of that technical error.

It's just that everyone is pondering how there could be 160 days ride length of salt flats.

Fair point, but he says it so authoritatively you just wanna think it's a movie messup, or discuss possibilities for days/months/years to make it true .

Side point about salt flats, shouldn't they provide large expanses of good driving surface? Isn't that why they are used to break land speed records?

Finally saw it. Here's my take....

I loved....
1. The insane action, stunts, and overall chaos. I was completely blown away.
2. All of the actors, each was great in their own ways. Tom and Charlize were great together.
3. The villains were awesome. I wanted more Immortan Joe.
4. The fact that it didn't pander to the audience with needless exposition and left things vague
5. References to the previous movies for us die hards
6. The PTSD element added to Max's character
7. The fact that it doesn't resolve itself with a shiny happy Hollywood ending (I was fearing a "oh look what we have for you Max...we rebuilt your Interceptor" scene, but thank Christ no)
8. It wasn't a direct repeat of any previous movies
9. The overall look and visual style. Great camera work and sound as well.
10. Max's scene where he gets the water hose, fights with Furiosa, etc and repeated attempts to file off the mask
11. Humor was subtle and not blatant like BT

I was disappointed with...
1. The death (twice) of the Interceptor, especially after such short screen time. It deserved to go out fighting to the bitter end.
2. The opening narration and could have been developed more in a montage a la MM2's opening (would have loved that, followed by the "my world is fire and blood line" leading into Max standing on the hill, etc).
3. I know it's only a movie, but realism was kind of WTF.... Max blown off an exploding car and has no injuries, Nux knocked off the rig and walks away, Max takes an arrow through the hand partially into his forehead and just pulls it out, Furiosa's stabbing and collapsed lung injuries.
4. Some of the dialogue was iffy, especially the lines about redemption when deciding about going back (the reasons don't matter, should be left ambiguous like Max's decision to drive the tanker in MM2)
5. The music was glorious in some places and bland in others. One could argue that it was literally too explosive (sound wise) to have music in the rougher scenes, but MM2 did this beautifully.

So I give it 8/10. Would really like to see a directors' cut for this movie. I definitely thought it was awesome, despite my minor criticisms.

Been a rough summer for me health-wise, plus many previous attempts to get to the theater never happened for reasons too complicated to explain here.

Getting captured by aliens would have been a lot easier!
