Yeah. I still think it would have been easily fittable into the old MM world.
Consider this idea:
The great northern tribe from MM2. Every 10 years, to honour the Road Warrior called Max who saved them, they select the fittest, fastest person from amongst them. That person is then given a car they've built (a replica interceptor) to head out into the bad lands to help others, the way the original road warrior helped them.

It only takes a 2 minute montage scene and voice over to set it up, and bam, into the action.

Whats nice about this idea, is that you can have constantly changing Maxs, and different tribes/gangs to run into each movie. You can even have different cars that max drives.

Forgive the question from someone who knows next to nothing about how this shit works, but wouldn't those parts of the rig be practically white hot at those points of the movie...?
