I don't like those lines : "I'm the road warrior" or "I was a cop searching for a righteous cause". For me it sounds like "I am Max, the guy you saw in the Mad Max movies".
For me it sounds like if the character was built on its own caricature in a way. It's not really a new Mad Maw, it's a Mad Max movie reimagined on the obvious facts people keep from the original trilogy :
He has a leather jacket, was a cop, has a black interceptor, bad guys look like strange punks/clowns and it's full of car crash in the desert.

But this isn't a movie made for die-hard fans that watched the originals in the cinema over 30 years ago.

Of course, I know... And it's a good thing ! But maybe they could bring this idea of "the road warrior" in a more subtile way than this...

With its budget, expectations and target audience in mind I don't think It would've been done any different.

I don't mind the "I'm the Road Warrior" line but the "Searching for a righteous cause " sounds a little corny . I thought that was what made Max "Mad "was the fact he had gone from a Cop , a Protector , righteous....to completely Indifferent to the suffering of others ( Leaving Gyro captain to starve , the whole I'm just here for the Guzzoline "line while rescuing Nathan , trading in human flesh , only agrees to join convoy after he loses everything etc etc ) more desperate than righteous I always though...and from what we've seen of Fury Road....he seems to be more Running than Searching . I'm hoping that particular voice over is just for the Asian Market , which seems big on long winded monologue's at the start of the film...with the protagonist often explaining his "Motivation"............anyway , my 2 cents is Survival is rarely righteous .

The fact that he has "Road Warrior" tattooed onto his back makes it a well known word used in that world and ok for me for Max to describe himself.
We are lucky if we saw 1 week in Max's life over the first 3 films. We actually know very little about that world.

It's not a question of target audience or budget. And they could have done this in a different way. I think it would sound less stupid if the "road warrior" expression wasn't coming from HIS mouth.
The "for a righteous cause" is definitely stupid, and really against the athmosphere of the previous movie. I don't care if they go in a different direction. But that sounds really stupid.

Keep in mind that those lines have been shuffled and re-edited out of sequence. For example the "righteous cause" line could be from the end for all we know.

Randy at AFTimes told me last year that one of the new lines they added for the opening narration and how it was said was "I was a cop. A road warrior". Obviously for marketing purposes they're shuffling around the dialog but Max's backstory is still built on the foundation of Mad Max and Mad Max 2.

I like the lines myself.
