Those vehicles with the fans look to be confirmed in the film, first spotted in one of the Nearmap workyard shots from 2010.

Personally I've been very impressed with some peoples ability to work out what some of the cars were very early on from very minor details.
It certainly is tough on us Yanks that grew up with American cars and are unfamiliar with Aussie designs. Some look close to US cars, but with all the modifications it IS really hard. With that said....
Thanks for all the info you have shared. I know I'm learning all kinds of cool shit! 8-)
I'm with ya Chase Bansi. I have never seen a holden much less a ford falcon xb coupe in person. Still fun none the less.

So...on the above photo with the crane truck (mad-max-dreharbeiten-4), there's a good Max look-a-likey on the far left of the photo...doesnt look too much like Hardy but looks a lot like a Thunderdome era max.

Bad ass pics there.

The story is about a war/chase across the desert - the vehicle design from the start has pointed to off-road action. I know it kind of sucks about not much actual bitumen road but the story is about a journey, "road" in a metaphorical sense so to speak. I'm sure we will see lots of crazy shit, these newer pics are actually showing us what some of the characters look like and the costumes look pretty good!

Edit: the website those pics are from is saying Chris Nolan is directing the movie and Weta are doing the special effects, I wonder how on earth they managed to get this information so wrong?

It also says Theron's character is "evil".

Weta were definitely linked to the production back when it was set to film in Broken Hill - it was listed on Weta's web page at the time (possibly still is, I have not checked). My understanding from what was written at the time was that they were providing practical FX (costumes, weapons, makeup FX, etc). You would assume they would still be in place for the current shoot.

As for the Chris Nolan involvement, well, not that I've read or heard anywhere! He's worked with Hardy a few times though, maybe someone got mixed up.

Also, on the no bitumen thing - it can all still work fine, depending on how the action works. I actually thought even the Thunderdome chase sequences were quite OK from that point of view, just some of the vehicles themselves were, well, a little odd. Even in Road Warrior, half the vehicles are off road half the time, everything is kind of fighting to stay on the narrow stretch of road they were playing with. Still, would be kind of nice to see some busted up post apocalypse bitumen freeways in there somewhere.

Pavement is not a requirement for a "road".

Hopefully that pooch is in the movie!

And the flag poles on the War Rig seem to be made from a hills hoist clothesline.
