Perhaps some variant of Münchhausen syndrome? (ie. to get sympathy / attention)

Splendid's facial scars were also in line with self harm injuries.

I always thought he had gone to war and failed in spectacular fashion trying to go out in glory so they stitched and stapled him back up.

I just remembered Slit was meant to have an obsession with knives. The only thing we see in the film is when he was about to decapitate Max with his gigantic switch blade.

Either way I can't wrap my head around that one other than he was looking for attention and cool scars to show off. Also another cool thing pointed out is how the Organic Mechanic rips his hair out to use as stitches and has a "Darwin tree"? that marks all Immortan Joe's failed children he's delivered.

Maybe he gave himself a permanent smile to impress Immortan Joe.

I would have to imagine thats MUCH higher then anybody could possibly have expected when it was released.

Although the unanimous praise it received kind of makes it seem like it could have been possible now in retrospect.

I had to update the thread title because...well...holy shit. Again, from all the years we've been here discussing Fury Road, who here expected that Mad Max 4 would be a heavy Oscar contender?

Ridley Scott not being nominated for Best Director leaves me to believe that Miller's chance for Oscar gold is now a lot greater. Not sure they'll give it to Innuratu 2 years in a row. WB must be absolutely giddy.

On the one side, I'm totally shocked that a movie so devoid of plot could be nominated for a best motion picture Oscar. On the other side, I feel it's only appropriate a movie that's had so much impact and critical acclaim gets representation at the highest level. I mean, I just know the audience is going to erupt like an army of War Boys when Fury Road is mentioned on the day - gotta respect that. These nominations are a huge win for car chases, real stunts, and electric guitar flamethrowers.
