Now why would anyone want to have a real sawnoff shot gun?
Biker,...to quote Nick the Bubble from the movie "Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels.."Sawn-offs are out...people want a bit more range these days.."
I shot Trap & Skeet for a few years...and did a bit of reloading... big powder (trap) loads shot from the shorter barrel skeet guns only produced more smoke at the muzzle, because the powder didn't have a chance to fully burn before the shot left the barrel.....
I had a shot of a "coach"-gun (about half-length barrel)...and although it did kick like billy-o...it was mainly due to the reduced weight...it was still just making more noise...(actually sounded a little 'fluffy')
I've always wondered if a 'sawn-off' would get much power out of the business end other ...than a lot of smoke and flash...the powder would hardly have a chance to burn!

I have shot a home made sawed off shotgun and when firing it, one would perfer lite loads. I shot full house buck shot loads and one slug round and that was enough for me. You just can't hang onto the grip with one hand. The shotgun slides right through your hand and it hurts like hell.

Having replica disarmed guns OK, even model guns I can understand, but a real working sawnoff that could never be fired except by a bank robber, or some psycho in a shopping mall. I just can't get my head around that idea.
Who says I could never fire it? I live out in the country.

And I read the shorter the barrel, the less the kick. Which does seem to make sense. I still haven't fired the gun as it is, but I am able to unload both barrels at the same time.
And looking at mine more closely, it looks like there used to be a cap at the bottom of the grip, like Max's gun has. I see three holes, the two outer ones look like they are drilled for screws. I might just have to make a little cap with a white ring to fit on the bottom.
The only reason I would want to turn it into a sawed off shotgun was because it would then be like Max's. It adds character. Just like someone turning a plain 4 door XB into a Big Bopper replica. The car can function 100% the same, but just looks different, and has more character.

It's like a dog chasing it's tail...the short barrel means less poweder getting burned..therefore less kick...but the light weight means more kick gets felt...so it should even out!
..however we've got "real world" evidence from 'Scar' that sawn-offs really do kick hard!
I agree with you on the slugs "Scar", they leave me with a bruised shoulder even in a long-gun!.. I don't understand why they kick so hard..they're less weight than a standard field load of shot (7/8th ounce vs 1 1/8th ounce for the shot)...but by golly,... the 'boot' at the other end!
I once shot a 50kilo sow with a slug at 50 ft...it went through both shoulder blades and burried itself 6inches into a termite mound!...after every slug shot, I was turned around 90 Deg to the target and the barrels were in the air.....I soon went back to Buckshot!

How about this for a "Shotgun"?

Civil War CSA Lemat Revolver.
.44 Calibur, Nine rounds with a tenth, "Grapeshot" Shotgun round from a second Barrel..
There's a Black Powder replica available, but it's very expensive.
I'm considering buying this one..

.36 Calibur and only the standard six shots.. But it's a Lot Cheaper.

Had the opportunity to fire a .40 Calibur Black Powder revolver at age 12.
Thought the thing had busted both of my wrists..
Kinda why the one I'm thinking of getting is a smaller calibur.
Used to go target shooting with my dad when I Was a Kid.
I mostly used his .22 Cal Rifle or my .410 Shotgun but had occasion to fire some other weapons from time to time.
Was pretty fun. (I was Good with the pistols, fair with rifle and couldn't hit sh*t with the Shotguns)
Today, I'd ONLY go shooting at a properly set up Firing range.

Without sounding like a arrogant dope, I'm pretty well versed with both handguns & long guns and have a collection of rare and exotic guns that all tolled are valued in the $60,000 range. That coupled with using firearms all of my life, being in the service ( Army ) and being in law enforcement for 22 years, one thing that I can tell you for sure...a shorter barrel on a large caliber, or gauge, in this instance, displays more felt recoil. My .50 BMG single shot rifle with a 36 inch barrel is a good example. If you shoot a .50 with a shorter barrel it kicks more. The large M-2 heavy machine gun ( Ma Duce ) doesn't kick as much as a smaller rifle due to it being mounted to a vehcile, tripod or it's actual weight ( 84 lbs. or 38 kilograms ).
You're right, one would want the MM gun for looks only. I "used" to own a short shot gun like that was describe and only fired those few times that I stated above. Absolutely useless. I'd take my good ole 1911 anyday...

If I wanted to build a Mad Max gun, I would probably stick to light bird loads. If you live in the country and you can shoot on your property, it would be a cool toy (as long as you do it legally). As far as the .50s, I would agree; I used to build bolt action .50s; many of them were used by the US Coast Guard. The Anaheim PD bought a couple of them for security at the 2000 DNC convention as well. The shorter barrels definately were obnoxious; It's been quite a few years, but I believe that the Coast Guard used to order 24" barrels (I could be off by a little, but I don't think so). Now I am am a network engineer for a Tier 1 ISP... how times change.
