I saw in cinema's here in the states. I can recall not liking it due to me being a kid and my main entry into mad max was Road warrior aka Mad Max 2.
I didn't understand it or the why it was so different so that is why I didn't like it as a kid and stuck mostly to the first two movies. That said as an adult I went back to watch it and understand it more and actually like th film now. it's not my top pick of the quadrilogy but I don't hate it anymore and rather fond of the vehicles and such.

I didn't see any of them on release, even Fury Road.
I did see a re-release of Mad Max/Mad Max 2.

MM3 on the big screen in 1985 was my first Mad Max experience. As a 13yr old I was generally impressed by the overall presentation and liked the film.
As an aviation fan I loved the Jedadiah plane sequences and still do.
Then I saw a censored MM1 on TV in 1987 and then MM1 and MM2 uncut on VHS in 1990, and only then did I see the short falls of the third installment.
Mainly from 1985 I remember all the hype and grandeur films of that period had, massive advertising, Tina Turner's song on TV, documentaries, interviews,
Starlog magazine features etc. - Mad Max colouring books!
