To think that Hardy or any actor for that matter wants to listen to music on an earpiece while they are shooting an actual scene is a bit of a stretch.
So, let me get this straight.
Max found the earpiece in the bag he took from one of the Wives in the War Rig. He then puts the clearly broken earpiece in his ear, despite that it's completely useless (the wires are hanging out). This makes no sense at all, except maybe to establish Max as some sort of a cop that's used to that technology and desperately trying to shove that thing in his ear even if it's not working. It could have been yet another example of how broken Max is, walking around with a non functional earpiece. Maybe that's why it was cut out?
One of the official posters depict Max with the earpiece...

I remember seeing that in one of early posters. Why would Max do that?

If he got it from the Bullet Farmer then its possible that his war party uses them to communicate, so Max would of put it on the listen to the enemies movements.

Just a theory..

If he got the earpiece from the Bullet Farmer when he upgrades his gear I could understand it: It might of served as some kind of ear protection given that ear gets rung twice by Furiosa with the Glock pistol and SKS. lol

In this weeks top 10 countdown at #1 - We Don't Need Another Hero by Auntie Entity, still going strong topping the charts for 7000 days straight! At #2 Tonton Tattoo with the only song he knows how to play, the "something tragic" remix.

I know, but this is what Mark Waziutak (sound recordist on FR) said to me.
