Are you happy with Will Smith and his brood making god awful big budget flops that people watch?
If they flop it means no one or near no one goes to see them. Will Smith is only kept into films because he's got connections and he is accepted as "the funny black".
Basically his statut means he can keep going, flop after flop. That's how the royalty works, all you need is to be in the favor of the royals.

Mel isn't in the favors, and that's because he doesn't play the game anymore. His last direct to video made more money than any recent Will Smith crap film in the same market. Says it all. Money doesn't talk, being PC and submitted to the royals does.

Given three predicaments which are affecting us today (peak oil, global warming, and a permanent global economic crisis), this new movie may become memorable.

Bad part of it all is that nobody really knows who George miller is and wont make the connection in that he made Mad Max and most will think that is just another remake of and old movie directed by somewhat unknown director. Of course the previews will say "From the director of Happy Feet" comes this crazy reboot of death on the highway. LOL I just hope the movies have at least a good of following as Gone in 60 sec did 13 years ago! Even if the film wasent the best. It would revive the originals much the way gone in 60 did for its original and the GT500!... Gone in 60 has its moments and some funny lines. Most of all I wish every US citizen knew what I know about the XA-XC Falcons! Its the other Mustang for crying out loud! hehe

Will it overshadow the original trilogy?
It's designed to overshadow it. What would be the point of making a movie that's worse than a 30+ year old franchise?
Everything we've heard so far about this movie (or movies, depends on how you look at it) just speaks 'volume'. 300+ cars, A-list cast, big budget, 3D, craziest stunts, etc.
Now, will is succeed in being better? There's no way of knowing at this point.

I think the real question here is if people will be drawn to watch the original trilogy after this 'reboot'. I sure hope so. Those are amazing movies and deserve a much bigger fanbase.

I think the younger generations... I know exactly what you are concerned with... probably won't even give this movie a view. The people that will see it are old fans, and if any new fans emerge they will be just as true as us. The people who won't be looking to watch the previous films probably won't be impressed with this one and will just fade from the scene.
