Hey guys,
Dave hasn't asked for this, but I'm going to do it anyway. I'd like to start taking pledges to help Humvee Driver get his glorious Humungus machine out to Southern California in October so that it can be part of the greatest Mad Max fan celebration of all time - Wasteland Weekend 2010.
Dave's pickup truck is getting old and probably can't tow the Humungus machine those thousands of miles. So he'll need to start thinking of other options. (There is another attendee in the midwest that offered to make the trip with Dave and has a two car trailer - problem is that that trailer is enclosed and the Humungus machine won't fit). Maybe they could rent an open two car trailer? Maybe Dave could rent a truck?
At any rate, I pledge $50 toward the fund if it can help Dave get his machine out here.
Give what you can. No amount is too small. Well, actually, anything under $5 is probably too small. But no amount is too big.
If more of us chip in, who knows what might be possible...
Let's help Humvee Driver get his Humungus Machine to WW2010!

I'll pledge $100 to see the Humungus Vehicle and to see Humvee Driver enjoy WW2010.

Re: Let's help Humvee Driver get his Humungus Machine to WW2
Hello my friends,
I, and the Machine, are in for the Wasteland Weekend.
First of all let me say that I am deeply humbled by the generosity I've seen here. I can't really express how I feel about it, but I want to say that I hate having to ask/depend on others for financial gifts. But that is where I find myself now. I'm going to contact Max Replica, Karol, and MFP 2020 about their pledges and how to get me the money. I'm going to be just scrapping by, so if anyone else can pitch in, I'd appreciate it. I'm going to need it, and I guess that's just the way it is and I should just do what I have to. So...
I'm going to fly out there and back, and have the Machine shipped out there and back. First off, who can tell me which airport is the closest to the event location?
I'm assuming I can take a taxi from the airport to the event. It would save me some more money if someone could pick me up/take me back, but I will make a taxi work if I have to.
I'm probably going to need someone to meet with the shipping company when they drop off the Machine. I'm going to try and have it dropped off right at the event. Then, depending on my return flight, I might need someone to wait with the Machine to coordinate having it shipped back.
Tomorrow I book my flight and contact the shipping company about when and where I can have the Machine picked up/dropped off.
So that's about it. I truly appreciate all this help from the bottom of my heart. You guys are a class act.
Thank you,
Dave

I'm thinking the closest airport is Ontario, Ca. Right by the 15 FWY.
Ontario International Airport, Ontario, CA 91761
http://maps.google.com/maps
(stupid link to specific map wouldn't work, cut & paste)
I think it would be a small fortune to take a taxi all the way to Lucenre Valley. Could you rent a car? Something small like a Focus? Or possibly renting a U-Haul truck & car trailer from Detroit?
How safe would The Machine be on a transporter? I would hate to see it arrive damaged, or with parts misssing.
I'm just scraping by myself, but I can offer to share supplies. Non-potable water for washing, and drinking water (more than likely jugs of tap water), and any extra food I can muster.

Dave, I think you'd want to either do Ontario (ONT) or Burbank (BUR). It also depends when you arrive. If it's later on Thursday or after, all of the organizers will be on site. Not to say one of us can't drive down and pick you up after sunset, though. Or another fan could pick you up.
Burbank would work better for me since that's where I hang when I'm in LA.
You could drop your machine off somewhere in California City and then drive it the rest of the way?
(Note to all: WW2010 just changed locations)

Just an update.
All day today I've been looking into shipping quotes for the Machine. Turns out there's a lot of bait and switch involved. As well as shady companies who will steal your credit card info, not deliver your vehicle on time, etc. Fun. The price for round trip shipping is now $2,200-2,400. I can't afford that. I'm still researching companies and maybe renting a truck.
This sucks.

Dave,
do not get screwed by transport companies. here is the one that Mad Max Cars always uses, and I am sure if you mention us they will cut you a good deal (we do a lot of work with them). It will DEFINITELY cost less that the price you have posted above. They have also always proved trustworthy. Just be sure to make it clear what your drop dead timelines are and why.

Thanks!
Tomorrow I'm going to make the final arrangements. MPF1, I'm going to call that company and see if they can give me a better deal. Do you have any name(s) I could drop?
As of right now, the total cost is about $2,200.
