HUMVEE Driver's DragonCon 2010 Report

Post by HUMVEE Driver »

Well, DragonCon has come and gone yet again. This one had more than it's fair share of ups and downs. First of all, on the way down there, the two right side tires on my trailer blew. SUCK. I thought I'd get one of the left side tires off and put it on the right side, then crawl up an exit ramp and look for a tire store. But, the jack that I had wasn't strong enough to lift the trailer AND the Humungus Machine on top of it. So, if you can't raise the trailer, lower the ground, right? I wedged a block of wood under the trailer frame, then got to work digging out the tire. Thing is, I didn't have a shovel. What I DID have was my giant sawblade axe. So there I was, on the side of I-75, 6:00am, chopping away at the hard-packed gravel. I finally got a hole big enough and transfered the tire. Then I had to put my truck in 4 wheel drive and floor it to pull the trailer off the block of wood. I loaded everything up and went looking for a tire place. I stopped at a department of public works place, and the two guys there were so incredibly helpful. They loaned me a strong jack and tools for my repairs. Then they gave me a ride to a tire store so I could drop off the wheels. It really made me feel good; these two workmen stopping to help out a total stranger. Two and a half hours later, I was back on the road.

DragonCon was awesome. I met up with Drunk Steve and talked for a while. I helped a female friend with her MFP uniform and loaned out tons of costume items for the parade. The parade itself was awesome. Along with pretty girls riding along, I had two live prisoners tied to the front of the Humungus Machine. The PA system worked fine, and I had a great time revving the engine up and down those city streets. I'm still getting pictures together, and I'll post them as I find them.

Then, the ride home. With about four hours left in the trip, I began hearing a slight grinding noise when I would turn the wheel a little to the right. It gradually got worse. I pulled over and looked underneath... the wheel bearings were WRECKED and falling off! This was about 4pm. Luckily, I was in Cincinnatti and not in the middle of nowhere. I got on the phone and arrainged for a tow. They brought me to a Dodge dealership, but too late to have any work done. I made a bed from the seat cushions from the Machine, and I slept in the back of my truck.

The next morning, they get my truck in the bay. It's not good. They had to order parts, and tt won't be fixed until the next day. I checked into a crappy hotel and spent the day killing time.

At 10:30am the next day, I was back on the road. I made it the rest of the way home without incident. But now my truck, almost at 100,000 miles, is under suspicion for any more long trips. :( Not a good feeling at all.

As I find more videos and images I'll load them up here. Aside from the mechaincal breakdowns, I had a great time. My costuming group wants to do Road Warriors again for the parade next year. I hope to see some more of you there!

That really sucks but at least you are home safe now. If it’s any consolation I heard nothing but positive things about the road Warrior group and especially you’re Humungus Machine. Some guy stopped me in the lobby and said the only time the crowd went wild was when we went by.
Defiantly planning for next year and hopefully will have a much improved costume.

So I guess that grinding noise did turn into something bad. I remember once I put huge home-made shackles on my pick-up truck's rear suspension and later started hearing grinding. One day my driveshaft fell out on the freeway. :D

Now that the truck's fixed, any chance of doing a trade-in for something newer or new?? I'm just not looking forward to the possibility of you not being able to make it again to Wasteland Weekend. We were hoping to have 4 BoBs out, but now it's looking like just one or two. At least we can bet on at least one BoB, one demon bike, and looks like everything is set for the XA to be here. And I'm sure some other inspired vehicles will come out like last year.

We'll have a couple of video crews out to get great footage, and they say there is a cable channel coming out to do a spot on us.

Is it time for donations again to try to make this happen? :|
