I had a friend bet me that is '79 400 TransAm would "bark" the tires at 70mph. This I could not believe. Sure enough, wound up to about 5500 rpms the old TA gave a nasty chirp going into high gear.

I was stunned and minus $10.

Not so much speed but more rediculous use of power,

Couple of years ago a friend had a Torana (70's small Aussie car which can take 4, 6 or 8 cyl engines) He is running an overpowered triple carby 6cyl engine in car which formerly had a 4. The diff is still some rediculous 4cly ratio which means the car is geared far to high. Tires are far to skinny. He does burnouts everywhere but engine revs far to hard on the highway...

Anyway one day at an intersection in a country town. His car is facing UP a steep hill with a cafe on the corner to the left. Light turns green and he takes off but does a burnout, Changes to 2nd gear and continues the burnout, then to 3rd still the car continues the burnout. but now is starting to slide backwards down the hill due to lack of traction...

Bemused cafe patrons watch as car shrouded in tire smoke and wailing engine and tires moves ever quicker backwards down the hill and out of their sight ....

Near the bottom of the hill he grabs for 4th gear and stalls the car as the wheels finally get traction. One tire is 99% molten rubber. He decided to drive off in a different direction this time and find somewhere to put on the spare...

270 Km/h in a German highway, with a Mercedes-Benz CLK V8 AMG without speed limiter. Very exciting! Image

Hi.

By the Tacho, 5900 rpm, with a 3:00 to one diff and 295X15 tyers.

At the time I worked it out to just on 160 MPH, (260 KPH). And I did speed calculation by working out the rotation distance of the tyre, and I did that with a roll out and tape measure over 5 rotations, but this does not take into account the tyre distortion.

This was in the replica Interceptor, it sat flat, no body lift, nothing weird happening, no vibrations it was very drivable.

But it was a very flat road. There were two people in the car.

For those in OZ it was on the road from Echuca heading north toward Deniliquen (forgotten how to spell that sucker) in NSW.

I have now way of knowing what speed it really was, the (stock) Ford tacho might have been out. Felt quick, must have been well past 150 mph (243 KPH) anyway.

Cheers

Gordon

I was once in a car doing 180 and a bit kph, a V8 commodore. Not that fast but it was on a suburban street, two lanes each direction. I was sh*tting myself thinking if someone pulls out in front of us we are gone or what if a tyre blew out. Couldnt tell if if I was shaking or the car.

The fastest Rio has ever gone was in a drag race between two camaros. The '67 I was in had buried the needle at the highest on the gauge...85 mph, but the '76 next to us had the needle at 120. We were hauling. I've been that fast once, I can do without it again. lol
