Book of Eli

Post by toecutter »

I love a good dystopian movie, and Book Of Eli didnt disappoint.

Naturally being an American movie, plenty of guns were on display, and bugger all decent cars. The baddies drove real crap and the goodie was on foot.

However, some of the bikes looked pretty good, even though they were crappy harley based bikes. Id love to get some screen caps of the bikes.

It wasnt a bad film, although the ending was corny and you could see it coming. Better than 'The Road' which blew chunks. i will get the DVD when it comes out.

Have you happend to have seen the "Samsara Chronicles" made by the same folks who did "Welcome To Where Ever You Are"? ;D

Looking for an honest oppinion outside of my own, do you think that Eli is a total concept ripoff of this film...... :o
>:(
OK they left out the "Kurdt Kobain as Jesus" stuff and the Trannys but otherwise....... the only diffrence seems to be Action thriller (Eli) vs Wacky Art Film (Samsara), based on a very similar premise.

I can only expcet die hard Mad Max fans to have seen the Samsara Chronicles it seems, so I cant get many folks to inteligently comment...... but if you want to chime in and have not seen it yet.....

I know that there used to be a bunch of places where you could see the trailer. The youtube one seems to be down (possibly the Eli producers actually bought the rights to this film), and I can only find this one functioning trailer so far. There were a few from back when the WTWEYA guys contacted me to see about getting the film into SIFF (seattle intl film fest). I have it on DVD. Maybe I am one of the few who was aware when this film came out.

Anyway, there is some brief discriptions and trailer info at the youtube repeater sites if you do a google search, but check out the trailer here and you tell me:

It seems it has been renamed "Freedom Deep". When I discovered this I said "Wow, a new name, a new directors cut. Ill have to check out the new version."

Here is a new trailer:

Opinions?

Personally i liked 'The Road'. I'd admit the acting wasn't the best at some parts, but that didn't detract from the excellent visuals.

I hesitantly enjoyed 'The Road'.
I know that statement verges on contradictory so let me explain.
It was tense and enjoyable as a journey yet horrifying as a view of the future.
It was devoid of the usual glamorous post-apocalyptic themes seen in films like resident evil-extinction or terminator, and left only the raw and startling view of the world left to the morals of man. A world with no consequence. It was terrifying to behold. Especially being a father.

I guess it was a waste of time building the greatest post apocalyptic machine ever conceived. (may as well sell the interceptor)

I thought The Road was ok, but I hated how it diverged from the book. In the book, a huge reason why the man and the boy survived for so long was the man's resourcefulness. He could think of ways to find food and shelter that others missed, he was an expert on keeping their equipment in working order, he could perform first aid on himself, he instinctively knew which actions would help them survive, etc. In the movie, he was just kind of bumbling along; just happening to find things to keep them fed and sheltered. I thought that really detracted from the story. Also, they left out or glazed over some of the more horrifying parts of the book. But overall the movie was ok.

The Road was a pretty good movie. I got a nice evening watching it.
Only the end was a bit disappointing. for me it didn't had a real ending.
The father dies and the boy was taken into the other family that probably scavenged further for food and supplies.
No real ending in witch they find a place with some enlightenment where they can live on.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

Spoiler alert:

In the days after watching it, I felt that even though he had lost his father, the boy had been fortunate enough to find the "Good guys"
He was unsure if they ever would, and was also beginning to think that he and his father were also bad guys.
His father had also achieved what he was compelled to do, and that was to protect his son, 'the word of god'
This love is what brought beauty to such a dark and cold story, as was the authors intention.

Also, the deleted scenes are downloadable.

I thought Book of Eli was good, but not great.

I liked all of the visuals, and the action scenes were great. The characters and the script needed more work, and there were a number of situations where we had to suspend disbelief a little too much, even more so after the ending is revealed. And if Gary Oldman really behaved like that in a post apocalyptic world, I think he'd get a bullet to the skull pretty quick. Compare Humungus or Aunty Entity, or even Deacon from Waterworld - those leaders are still in control, but without being so overly oppressive. I just didn't buy how a lot of the characters were interacting in Eli or their actions, it just didn't seem real on that level. Once again a pity, because the film had a lot of other good stuff going for it, if they could have brought the character acting and dialogue up a couple of notches.
