hey jared, do you have any ideas on mohawks, only ones i can find are in the states that look close enough. Im looking for more like
the ones in madmax3, they were strapon types and had longer hair down the back, ideas?
You should definitely ask Karol about those. I think they're made from horse hair or something. I think he showed me one at his shop a long time ago if I remember right.
Traditional Roman style was horse hair, with glue to keep it up (I image it's the same tbh as proper Max style).. you can also probably use synthetic hair from your local beauty store if you can't find actual horse hair.
Hi Alan,
The mohawks in MadMax3 were made out of horse tails. They are actually the skin from a horse's tail laid out flat. The most common use for them is as manes and tails for high-end rocking horses. The most available color is black. I purchased a few from the UK on eBay for about US$50 each.
The skin is normally stiff rawhide, and requires some serious shaping. I was going to shape my mohawks by immersing them in water for a day, and then stapling them to a head-shaped block of wood until they dried into place. At that point, I was going to drill holes into the rawhide and rivet straps on. Depending on the comfort level, I may consider gluing in some suede (and possibly a thin sheet of craft foam) onto the underside of the mohawk using Barge cement.
Getting the hair to stay up is something that I will have to figure out once I'm there, although it should be easier than the thin synthetic hair that I have used before. You should be able to wet and blow-dry the horsehair without worrying about the rawhide distorting at that point.
Keep your eyes on eBay for vintage shin guards. I picked up a lot of 5 sets in various sizes for about $15. They were old and dirty and perfect. Save a fairly wide search ("baseball shin" for example) and keep watching. I've already bought more shoulder pads than I need, most too small for my "Humungus" frame. Unfortunately, despite having read Karol's tutorial, I still can't figure an easier way to get paint to stick than to sand the plastic, which blows. I even tried the paint supposedly designed to paint plastic furniture, and it came off as easily as everything else.
Speaking of reflectors and stuff, I work on shipping terminals so I'm always picking up random stuff. I had an idea of putting a bunch of working red taillights on my costume for nighttime. Still thinking about that one.
We now have our passports approved and will be purchasing our airfares mon 31st august.
Have just purchased some more things on evil ebay for our costumes, it is full go ahead for them, we are going to a costume party in early oct and plan to take pics then so will be looking forward to then, yes we are going to wear our madmax costumes. Also with building the car we are very busy as that is nearly to the painting stage.
I also have alot of old school dragster bike parts, i will go through the boxes to see what i can use, i was thinking bike lights on the shoulder pads and as madmax images said, maybe get them working lol. I have about 15 dragsters in my collection and boxes n boxes a bits.
pics are a bit dark, will have to get some on the weekend in daylight.
after seeing the vid of the Roadwar parade, prity much anything goes. dont forget im no costume maker but im givn it a try lol.....
I do have a gun holster but duno how ill go getn that through customs.
Still got just on 2 months to get it all together, going to a costume party in oct to test run it, and i may take to the Ford coupe weekend to hang around Brads coupe.
Still got the arm pads to finish off.
And still got to think of something for the front of the shoulder pads.
