I think that whilst it is a good film in its own rights, I wouldnt really call it primarily a car film.
Its a very weird and troubling movie with a major role reversal at the end. ie; our underdog main character joe becomes the bad guy, while daisy becomes the good guy. (maybe it is the result of an anxiety)
Having said all of that, here are the best 3 minutes of the film. Gotta love that brushed metal look on the charger.
I also respect the fact that all of the actors were involved in a lot of the car stunt work. This is apparent from the visible effects of inertia on their bodies which is noticable during the front on facial shots. Especially nadine garner in the passenger seat with no belt on.
Not so real in the ass ramming sequence which has the actors over doing it.

Metal Skin brings back some memories.

i was involved in illegal drags back in the 80's and only got it out of my system when i moved interstate and became a responsible adult etc etc. Of course i moved to the Alice where the speed bug was well and truly satisfied with no open speed limit on the roads.

It captures some of the feeling surrounding the drags, but we used to go to Cooper St or Donnybrook Rd instead of inside warehouses. Donuts occurred near the breweries off Lygon St.

Metal Skin had some structural flaws, and as a film it used movie magic for the bizarre induction system in the valiant. I think a great illegal drags in th 80's film is yet to be made. Running on Empty is the closest so far. Metal Skin was also made by the bloke who made Romper Stomper, and he is all about relationships and power.

Great clip though.

I struggled with some of the storyline elements of "Running on empty".
The Main character is a crap driver. He never wins a drag race.
There is a fantastic driver in the film who appears to be completely blind. WTF?
He befriends the blind guy who ends up rebuilding the main characters XY after it was trashed. For free. WTF?
The main character then smashes his car again as he does everytime he drives the thing.
He then shows up at the blind guys house and asks to borrow his own prized car in order to drag race somebody, the blind guy then agrees to lend it to him. again, WTF?

And another thing, when did losing a drag race become grounds for suicide?

Please let me know if I mis-interpreted the story.

I saw a ute yesterday with 'fuck off were full' on an aussie map sticker and an 'aussie pride' sticker on each corner of his window. on his TOYOTA ute.

what a clown.

I agree, subarus are just dull. and its all about the stereo.

there were jap cars back in the 80's rotarys were quick, and i've played with a few. most dangerous car i saw was a toyota crown with a 350 chev in it. to fit the engine and gearbox the floorpan had been hacked away and not replaced. you could see the exhaust manifold, engine and auto from inside the car!
