Really, I don't know, but maybe you've hit on their posts before, so their names are shaded to let you know you've read their posts.
I'm as clueless as you mate, I just never cared enough to find out.

I still haven't worked it out exactly yet (I've been curious myself since the question was asked...), but I have noted that it seems that all the older forum members are the ones in grey, and the newer members are the ones in blue.

Perhaps it is that all the users migrated from the previous forum are grey - they might be missing some sign up information for the current software that new users are entering automatically (you could try editing your profile and filling anything out, and see if that changes it). Otherwise it might just be intended to show someone who has been around for a while.

normally a group identifier- there should be a table somewhere in the refdata where you can set the criteria for group membership - eg from another board i post at:

Red letters = site admin
Green letters = moderator
Yellow background = Wiki editor
Blue background = senior member
Blue letters = member
Brown background = newbie
Brown letters = probationer
