Here's my two cents (and you'd probably get change)
: George Lucas
He'd have the movie show us Max as a baby. Because after all, the "master story teller" can't even tell a story in the right order.
: Quentin Tarrantino
He's a freak. 'nuff said.
: Stanley Kubrick (although its 110% impossible)
Aside from being dead, he'd probably make it an interesting piece of eye candy with little plot. (mind you, 2001 is one of my faves)
: Martin Scorcese
"The Last Temptation of Max" (then again maybe not)
: Ridley Scott
Now HE could probably pull it off.
: James Cameron
The enormous budget would make everything look too polished. Leo DeCaprio would probably be cast as the son of Max, in which case we'd all have to boycott the movie.
: Leonard Nimoy
Nah, too trekkie.
: Francis Ford Cappolla
He'd turn it into an art film.
: Steven SPielberg
He'd only do it if it could be the basis for a theme park ride or a Saturday morning cartoon.
Personally, I think only Dr. George would have the right vision to make the project really shine. He'd have to at least be the producer. It'd be interesting to see what would happen if Mel Gibson directed it.

Fight Club kicked a*&. Seven was damn freaky. What about Sam Rami. Alot of cheezy humor and some funky camera works with funny sound effects.
I can see it now. Mad Max putting on his knee supporter. He He. Id love it.

Although I agree that George Miller is the only man for the job, it would be interesting to see what David Lynch would do. Only the severly twisted would understand it.

Another awesome director would be Spike Jonze, who just broke out with his film "Being John Malkovich"...he used to make skateboard movies and has made a bunch of cool mtv music videos, such as weezer's "buddy holly" wax's "California" (a slow motion video of a guy on fire running down the street), and the beastie boy's Sabatoge video!...spike i feel could bring the speed and action to the movie very well. (he was also in 3 kings with george bafooney)
