Nuclear..... STUFF.

Post by Foxtrot X-Ray »

I thought it might be a good idea to move the discussion about various things connected to Nuclear Weaponms & Energy to a seperate thread.

Seemed to me that the Good news thread is getting just a bit long. Image

First thing.. I did find accounts of overly large animals (Deer, Boar, Catfish. Earthworms & Etc..) in the Chernobyl area.

No pictures. Not One.

Let's give these a mention.

Deer An American (I think) Film Crew reported seeing a "Huge Deer" while filming in the Chernobyl area. Hmm.. An ELK perhaps?

Similar looking creatures, but elk are much larger.

Boar Face it, these guys get HUGE anyway.

Catfish Same film crew and others have reported Catfish, or Channel Cats 80 pounds and nearly six foot long in the area.

Divers have reported seeing Channel Cats in a lake in NEBRASKA that are Six feet long or longer. One was caught by a fisherman in another Nebraska lake that weighed 86 pounds and was five foot 11 inches.

Worms Six inch earthworms? Ooooh, Scary. I'd chalk these up to just plain normal.

Feel freel to comment on this, add your own Nuke related thoughts, whatever.

I did an essay on Nuclear weapons including the working of the Atomic bomb and the Hydrogen bomb.

It is to bad that the working of the Nuke and it,s Fallout last very long...

Chernobyl is a story on it,s own for the reactor is still working and the radiation is still *getting out of the reactor*

They f**ked up BIGtime.

As I understand, the "Sarcofagus" that was built around the reactor is cracking & crumbling quite badly..

Going to be extraordinarly difficult and dangerous building a new one.

Radiation level within a hundred meters of the building is at lethal Levels.

Anyway, As I posted in the other thread..

True Story....A Documentary film crew on assignment in Chernobyl wearing radiation suits found out that the film they were using was transforming itself in the camera like it was being developed because of the massive amounts of radiation " heat ". The amount of vehicles, heavy equipment , aircraft and military equipment left behind was enough to fill the acreage of the Chernobyl airport. You couldn't sell that stuff on E-Bay with a $0.01start price.

You guys don't really wonder where OSAMA is gonna get his Plutonium do you? Some broke ass Russian guard with bills to pay and 12 starving kids will turn over the keys to some bomb shed left forgotten when the " cold war " ended.

There are many sattelite tracking stations in very remote parts of Russia-Siberia that were powered by compact nuclear power generators small enough to fit in the back of a pick-up truck. ( ute )

There are four reactors in the Chernobyl installation, number four was utterly obliterated during the accident. Number.. 3.. I think.. was damaged in the explosions (there were 2 explosions). The remaining 3 were back in service some months later, but the last one was shut down after pressure from the West (and a loads of money) about a year or so ago, so the plant is dead now from what I understand.

Yeah it is. I hear it is the 2000 tonne reactor lid that's causing the most apprehension. It was hurled out and landed at an angle on top of the damaged reactor containment. It's being supported by steam pipes and knackered concrete which is rusting and cracking. If it falls, people who know about such things expect a *massive* cloud of radioactive dust to escape and drift half way around the world.

Not that atomic energy is a hobby of mine or anything Image

OK here goes nothing:

Basically, the first thing that happened is that the cladding around the uranium burst, and water came into direct contact with the fuel, vaporising the water. The steam explosion that followed shattered the containment and let air in. As this was happening, the oxidising uranium metal stipped the oxygen from the water, creating hydrogen. This mixed with outside air and ignited. This large explosion is what opened the building up like the photos you always see. The lid blew off and most of the graphite core was thrown out of the reactor building, while the rest was burning intensely. The majority of the fuel, now molten and unregulated, mixed with sand which had been packed around the core and miraculously been released due to damage and mixed with the uranium to form this lava-like molten deathgoo. This mixture flowed through damaged pipes and burned through concrete until it began to cool under the reactor building and formed a suprisingly stable glass-like substance. It's still hot, but the glass effect is keeping it fro going anywhere. I remember this programme on TV where these inventive Russian scientists couldn't get into the stuff to analyse it and eventually took an AK-74 and shot bits off it which they collected by robot (it was absurdly radioactive). If the sand was not present, the fuel would still be extremely dangrous no doubt. They did find un-glassed fuel in small amounts, steaming violently several feet below the basment floor, but I believe they poured lead, sand, dolomite, clay and some boron mixture onto it to stabilise it.

So there is a lot of heat in there, but none burning or melting anymore.

if this hasn't been posted before, there was an outstanding website of a girl that rode into the Chernobyl area on her motorcycle... this link may still work. It came over from the UE community.
