Something I noticed

Post by PrinceVegeta »

Ok, for about 7 or 8 years of watching Beyond Thunderdome I have noticed something about Max's eyes. One is brown and one is blue. The one that was swollen shut in MM2 is the one that is brown. And I noticed it a few times through out the movie. Did anyone else notice that. And if so why was it done??

I think I saw that before, maybe the color was damaged or something.

His eyes started out brown, didn't they?

I've heard that injury can change eye color, but the eye that was injured in MM2RW is still brown in MM3BT.

You'll also notice that there's a scar on the left side of Max's face, going right over the eye.

Me and Randy (ANKLECRANKER) wrote an enlightening "excerpt" for INSIGHT, long time ago... Now I don't know IF it will be still included in the section facts or not, anyway... a PREVIEW for you:

(Written by Tiziano Caliendo and Randall Newton):

Max's left eye was seriously damaged as depicted in

the final scenes of "THE ROAD WARRIOR". Glaucoma, a

disease of the eye marked by a gradual loss of vision,

was the final result.

As time pasted into the years seen in "BEYOND

THUNDERDOME", Max's left eye was nearly blind. Even

the naturally blue colored iris changed to a blackened

milky shade. The eyeball became stationary in an

over-focused staring way.[/font][/font]
[div]To further Max's character development, Director Miller had Mel wear a contact lens to change the "damaged" eye's color. Miller has

long been known to master the details of a story like no other. This attention to detail is part of his film-making genius. This eye color change was clearly noticed while watching the confrontation between Max and Aunty in the Penthouse (where Mel's face is more

exposed) or when Max is speaking to Jedediah in the

cave while intimidating him to drive the Transaviar

plane.[/font][/font][/div]
[div][/font] [/div]
[div]Basically, that's how Miller suggested Max's handicap:

CAMERA SHOTS:

In the scene where Max's is filmed from his left

(When Mad Max approaches The Collector in Bartertown's

entrance) you can see Mel keeping his left eye

fully-opened and steady on what he's actually

watching. This is to accentuate the stoic eye. Another

connection to this theory is during the "Tell" scene:

Slake gives Max a viewfinder. Perhaps Max's left eye

is done for good because even Miller's camera focused

just on Max's RIGHT eye as he looks through the two

eye viewfinder to see "Tomorrow-morrow Land".

NARRATIVE CLUES:
[/div]
[div]

This theory-thread continues in two more details

relating to Max and his damaged eye. First, during his

"Gulag" banishment, a "Mardi-Gra" style carnival clown

mask covered Max's face. Look closely, the left eye of

the mask is even colored black. And finally, during

the "Tell" scene again , the Waiting Ones show Max a

rock wall fresco of Capt. Walker saving the children

as they ride on his outstretched wings/arms. Even

Capt. Walker - presumably Max at this point - has a

black patch covering his left eye, in pure Snake

Plissken-style. [/font][/div][/font]

Do you think it's enough good? I'm no more sure it could be galucoma at 100%, I have to do more researching!

Yeah, I noticed it in Thunderdome a lot, but I thought everyone knew about it and why it was like that. As soon as I noticed it, I immediately thought, "Oh yeah, the accident in RW."

One of the places you can see it the most was when Jebediah stops the plane and Max is sitting on the wing looking up at him. This is right before he climbs onto Jebediah's side and says, "What are you waiting for? Kick her in the guts."

I think it's a great detail that Miller included throughout the film.

This is true. David Bowie has different colored eyes. He said his eye got injured at school or something.

Marylin Manson also has different colored eyes, but his was somehow self-inflicted.

I think Jane Seymour was born that way. She said she would lose acting jobs because of it. What a shame.

Yeah, I noticed Jane Seymour had different colored eyes, but she's still gorgeous.

DRAT!

I was wrong. Gibson DOES have blue eyes. I was thinking they were brown.

Never heard of an eye going DARK from an injury. Light yes, but not dark.

Still, Miller's got medical schooling, so I'll admit defeat.

Ok I figured it was cuz of the injury, but I didn't know for sure if an injury can cause something like that. I just wanted to make sure. And yes you can tell Miller paid a lot of attention to detail. But thanks for the answers. I was really kinda curious.

And as for something else I noticed by watching MM3BT there is a part towards the end when Barter Town was going up in explosion. And Auntie ges up and she starts telling everyone they will rebuild. And you see Black Finger look at her and go "What??" If you watch that tube that connects from his hand to his neck comes off. What in the hell is that tube for???
