So, I read the short story this is based on.....so you wouldn't have to. Can't say I enjoyed reading it all that much. The lead characters aren't developed enough to make you care about them, which isn't surprising for a story as short as this. The more interesting parts are the stories of long past events that are told throughout, but they weren't really memorable either. It'll be curious to see how Miller treats the subject matter. Maybe this will be a case where the movie improves on the source material.

The movie was test screened in NYC over the weekend.
George Miller’s ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ Test-Screens in NYC

February 26, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

It's been seven years since George Miller gave us "Mad Max: Fury Road," but before he boards its sequel "Furiosa," Miller will be tackling romance with "Three Thousand Years of Longing,” starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.

The film was test-screened on Tuesday at the AMC Lincoln Square in New York City. A genie romance that will be highly polarizing is what I’m hearing. A $60 million dollar art film.

Miller examines contemporary society via the conventions of the folk or fairy tale genre. This is a film about the “impact of storytelling on storytelling,” a sort of “Arabian Nights” for our times. Another person who attended mentioned the “sensuality and eroticism” depicted in the film, and that this was Miller’s most philosophical movie to date, one that might alienate much of the fanbase he built with “Fury Road.”

Said to not be as visually-driven as ‘Fury Road’ the film tells the story of a lonely and bitter British woman who discovers an ancient bottle while on a trip to Istanbul and unleashes a djinn who offers her three wishes. Filled with apathy, she is unable to come up with a wish until his stories spark in her a desire to be loved. Her resulting wishes are not for prosperity or happy forever-afters, but for solving issues that she has to deal with in the modern world.

There is currently still no release date for “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”

Another ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ Reaction

February 28, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s another (negative) reaction of George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” which screened last Tuesday at the AMC Lincoln Square in New York City. The early word is that this is a genie romance that will be highly polarizing. A $60 million dollar art film:

“Went to a test-screening last week. This is going to be in post-production hell forever. It’s kind of a non movie. Goes absolutely nowhere for 80 minutes and then the last 20 comes out of nowhere. It wastes 75% of its running time with flashbacks. And Tilda [Swinton] is somehow bad in it. Tilda meets a genie and he grants her three wishes, right She's in Istanbul to present a lecture on "narrativism" (literally talks in front of a projection of Marvel characters) and then buys a little bottle and when cleaning it...genie! She doesn't want to make a wish so he spends half the movie telling her about all the people he's previously granted wishes for and after all that she's like "I wish you would love me" and then they have sex and move back to London together.“

There is still no release date for “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”

Hmm. The movie as described, and the reaction to it, matches my own feelings about the book. Not a particularly good sign.

If history taught us anything it's that George Miller always juggles at least 2 projects, one of which sucks, and another is a Mad Max film.

That's why personally I don't really care for 3000 years of longing, as much as I didn't about Babe 2 and Happy Feet 2 while Fury Road was being prepared at the same time. Just so happens that 3k years of longing is the 'side project' to Furiosa and I guess that's the most important takeaway from it.

First of all I want to thank you biolumen, you're great at getting these scoops and I appreciate it my friend! :) Second of all I'm still really excited for this film. Miller is my favorite director and I like seeing him do other projects in addition to MAD MAX, I like the variety. I'm rooting for this film.

Miller's forte is world building. That's one big reason why his Mad Max movies stand out from the rest of his filmography (at least to me). It's so unfortunate that he never got to make the Justice League movie or his take on Homer's 'The Odyssey' with Brad Pitt (set in space), as those two would have provided an opportunity for some serious world building.
