Thanks for the adds ... I've seen two of the cars you've listed ... the XC @ Carringbah and the XB 'GT' @ Ryde which I described in previous posts. I was keen to have a look at the Goss at Newport ... hey ... just around the corner from me ... until I realised that it was Newport VICTORIA ... Doh!

I went out Penrith way yesterday to look at the Cobra ... 42 degrees, drive through a bushfire and crawl through bumper to bumper traffic for an hour and a half ... gawd it was HOT!

The car is Cobra #122 ... a 351/fmx/air/steer/window version. The owner seems like a nice enough chap who was ... well economical with the truth.

The car was described as 'complete but partially disassembled' ... true ... if partially disassembled means that everything that unbolts has been and is stacked haphazzardly in the cabin.

'Most of the rust has been repaired' ... well except the fist size hole in the firewall behind the ns front guard and most of the repairs seem to involve a lot of bog and little or no welding. In his defense his son had started and abandoned the resto and he may not have been aware.

He was a font of info as he apparently has a 'Bathurst' Cobra himself.

I did the sums and to my mind the car would only be an economicly viable proposition for someone who could do the bodywork themself. It needs blasting / stripping / welding and spraying.

The interior was sort of there ... the door trims had not responded well to being out in the weather with the backing boards ruined and the carpet trims soggy and smelly ... the rest of the int trim seemed to be in ice cream containers and strewn about the interior.

He is a motivate seller but I didn't want to insult him with a low offer as I don't have the time for a full resto. The car hasn't been advertised as yet but I would expect this soonish as he is moving shortly.

Hi Pete,

Sounds like it could be expensive, How much did he want?

Recovering seats with original material will cost $1,500.00 plus another $250.00 to replace the black vinyl if needed.

Full bare metal respray starts at $8,000.00 without any repair work and just goes up by the thousand for each panel repair.

New rubbers all round will cost $800.00

Just keep adding the $ for the mechanicals if needed and all the little bits and pieces.

A good one in excellent condition for $20,000.00 is a good buy compared to one that requires a lot of work unless you have the time and many skills.

He has the fabric for the seats ... must have come from the club I guess.

I asked a tame panel beater who only does resto jobs ... he's working on a HQ Sandman among other things ... and his ballpark figure was $15k for rust and spray. That's a big ballpark!

I'm certain that a good original car is the way to go ... having seen #122 and crunched the numbers it's pretty obvious.

We didn't talk money but as there is a similar sounding car in Victoria for sale at $6K I expect he'd be after much the same money. You'd have to be keen.

There is one more that I have a line on and will be checking this weekend ... low ks / big bucks.

The first one sounds like a good buy, I'd get on to to it quick if I was you.[/font]

I had an e-mail from the guy in the USA who bought Cobra 349, it was in storage in Dubbo for past 10 years, he picked it up from Jarvis Bay area and took it to Melbourne. Nearly hit a roo on the way down!
