I think they played with the engine sounds a little bit, I always thought it was meant to be a subtle nod that MM1 was set in the future so the cars had some futuristic features on them (the whole never having a starter motor crank it over before it fires, for example, or a switchable supercharger).

The sound of the engine itself was real but it was 'dressed up' in cool sounds.

The ignition sound sounds literally like a blowtorch and when it turns off there's this weird sound air intake sound that could've been done with anything.
Otherwise the engine itself, the supercharger whine is real.

Another cool fact about the engine sounds in the movie, those sounds were tuned individually to different pitches to give more character to each vehicle. In MM2 they even tuned the engine sounds to music as well as horns etc.

http://www.madmaxinterceptor.com/html/car_history.html

"Roof, boot spoilers, wheel arch flairs and concord front nose were sourced from Errol Platt and Peter Arcadipane. The Interceptor featured 8 operational exhaust pipes 4 on each side, but during filming the sound from so many side pipes muffled the sound, so as a alternative the exhaust rumble from the Interceptor was dubbed over, and what your really hearing in the soundtrack is a Chrysler V8 Hemi.!"

The Interceptors exhaust was actually Murray Smiths ( Mechanic from movie) V8 Hemi Valiant Charger.

The Valiant Charger never came with a Hemi V8 (either a slant 6, the Hemi 6, or a small block V8 ... the Hemi 6 was the best but wouldn't sound right for the movie).

You could cram a Hemi V8 into a Chrysler A body, they did a handful of 'Cudas in '69 from the factory in the US for example, but I've not heard of it being done to a righthand drive one (in left handed configuration there wasn't room for power steering or a brake booster)... it was a physically huge and heavy engine, so would make for an unpleasant driving experience in anything other than a straight line.

I'd be interested to know what the car they used actually was ... Valiant Chargers are super cool!
