I mean, he would have had to have been rich enough to pay full price for a Mark VII, brand new. Most folks who are going to do something like that to a car are going to start with a used one that they were able to pick up cheap, many years after it rolled off the assembly line.

Ummm are going to down this path to explain what "replica"means???? The bloke who built these is delusional.
These cars are NOT replicas.. i had this argument with him many years ago.
Not to mention this bullshit about... oooh im the first... how the hell would he know?
Given madmax is Australian, how the HELL would he know what ACTUAL replicas were built here after mad max screened?
We are 100% snafu....

No, not at all. This car is clearly not a true BOB replica, but a very different type of car that incorporates BOB styling cues. I was only addressing the question of whether it was plausible that the car's owner was the first person to build a car inspired by the BOB, whether faithful replica or the thing you see here.

I'm saying even that claim is not plausible, because this guy would have needed to have gotten to work almost immediately after the Mark VII was introduced in 1983. And, as you pointed out, there would need to have been no BOB replicas constructed by anybody else prior to that point.
