The History of Mad Max Video Games

Post by Taipan »

Happy New Year!

Here's my new "Mad Max Bible" video where I talk extensively about the history of Mad Max video games.
4 unreleased games and only 2 officially released titles. I talk about the reasons why this was the case and about the true nature of the 2015 Mad Max game.

So if you've ever wondered why we've only had 2 Mad Max games over the course of 25 years or why the 2015 Mad Max game is so out of place - please watch this video.
I hope that this video also sheds some light on Miller's relationship with the video game industry and how WB handled this franchise.

Enjoy and please let me know what you think!

Some informative information on the attempted spin offs by the world of gaming there Tiapan. Also the general information in other areas I’ve come across on the net, not game related, by you. Good to come across.

Sad not having full control over the games and at a guess over the films themselves concluding in disputes needing settlement by the court. At a guess not game related, probably just to ensure the success of the film to the detriment of the budget and the 7 million bonus unfortunately.

Ps I thought the vehicles were overdone and looking at the vehicles you put up from the game originating in 2010 seem more believable to me. I guess more minds accomplished all those awards.... but not best picture.

Fantastic work!!!

Despite its flaws I love the game and feel it is the best telling of a Max story since the Road Warrior. It also has several glimpses into what Fury Road's world could have looked like in earlier drafts.

You bring up some very good points about them taking Miller's ideas and using them without proper context. I always felt some parts were just lumped in without proper understanding like the kamikaze warboys and references to Immortan Joe, citadel, bullet farm etc

Again great work and thanks so much for making this! Going to watch it again and spread it around.

Thanks guys, glad you liked it!

I'll be working on more of those videos of course. All of this stuff really deserves to be in a book but the situation with Fury Road is still fresh and I'm 100% positive that I would never be granted permission to publish my findings. But on Youtube that's all fair play as long as I don't step on too many toes. I kind of feel crappy for bringing up revelations that I can't back up with references because obviously all this stuff is very top secret so I'm only allowed to show a tiny portion of what's going on but I guess with the amount of information I'm bringing that gives it enough credibility for the time being.

Excellent video, as always!

How so? A shame to hear that.

By the way, how did you get your hands on script excerpts of the next Mad Max films?

Great, great job here Taipan! An awesome piece of work. It's a shocking reveal to me to know that the game contains spoilers from the future Mad Max movies : it's both exciting (I can't help but wonder which parts of the game  ) and infuriating... George Miller must be very upset about that.

Because I'd run into legal trouble for sure. At this point I just know too much, all sorts of publicists wouldn't want this stuff to be out, at least not now when the franchise picked up after 30 years again. With those videos I have at least a chance to deliver a few saucy bits without repercussions. An officially released book with all the cool things is off limits for now. For comparison - there's just as much if not more interesting behind the scenes stuff from the original trilogy, but that stuff is water under the bridge right now so no harm no foul when it's out.

Sorry but I can't tell you how I know those things.

There's a reason why George never said a word about this video game. This game is a prime example of how WB treats Mad Max, another example are the toys.... Miller never approved the N2 Mad Max toys. Recently announced Funko Mad Max figures were supposed to be made by NECA who deliver a quality product. But - as it is - WB decided to give the license to Funko who will create cheaper (and most likely worse quality) Mad Max figures. WB is all about maximizing profit with no regard to intellectual property at hand. Miller really doesn't like that. But the financial bonanza that's been going on with Fury Road on the movie production's side isn't helping this relationship either. I'm not sure if anyone realizes but Miller has been battling WB since the movie came out, not to even mention how much he had to fight to get the movie done to begin with, that's a whole another story.... I mean for Christsakes WB wanted to release Fury Road without The Citadel sequences... how's that for their understanding of Miller's vision?

Great video Taipan and I’m already looking forward to the next one. These licensing issues are absolutely fascinating! I picked up the Funko Pops (they’re really not bad for what they are) and am optimistically hopeful that the figures will likewise be good. Do you think that now Fury Road is finally being licensed, we’ll see other companies produce products? I’m not expecting any kind of Star Wars like blitz or anything but I’d love to see some statues or models.

I think there will be but their quality won't be any good. The Greenlight Interceptors that came out recently could've been much better and I'm not talking about the quality of molds or details, it's that they did the proportions wrong, the wheels are off and that's something that could've been fixed on the design stage without sacrificing anything. The upcoming Funko toys don't bid too well because their previous line of 'realistic figures' (I forgot what the name of that line was) was breaking left and right because of poor design. And I don't think Funko is going to address this issue because their CEO focuses on vinyl figures instead and all the other ones are left behind. But maybe they'll deliver something solid, who knows.

I'd be on the lookout for the Read Player One movie merch. The Interceptor is in that movie (because it's in the book, plus it's the property of WB so they can chuck it in there), so there's a chance it ends up as a collectable of some sort.

Thanks for this Taipan, this is all very fascinating. I'll watch the video later as I'm currently at work. I'd be very interested to know what elements of the game are taken from future Mad Max story ideas and concepts. I absolutely loved the game but it definitely feels like it took Miller's ideas but put them together with little understanding as to how all the pieces work as a whole.
