blacmocco, the thing with the earpiece (earphone) comes from Morrisminor who was at the screenings too:
Morrisminor wrote:In the test screening from 2014 it shows Max finding the earpiece in the bag that he takes from one of the wives in the War Rig and actually put it in his ear. It was a character moment that just didn't gel with the situation they were about to get into. To think that Hardy or any actor for that matter wants to listen to music on an earpiece while they are shooting an actual scene is a bit of a stretch.
Morrisminor wrote:I was at the screening. He finds the ear plug in the bag that he takes from the wives and right there in the rig he puts it in his ear. At the time it suggested a suppression of the voices in his head or to drown out the bickering of the wives. But he had it in there for the duration of the chase.
Not sure why Morrisminor's posts don't exist anymore but it puts a dent in the legitimacy of his claims. Regardless, they're from this topic:

Why would that earpiece be in the promo shots then, and even in early posters? Surely it shouldn't be there. Maybe Miller was referring to actual working earpieces that actors had.. Max's looks more like an earphone with the cable broken off and dangling, not like a communication device but rather like something that might have served some on-screen purpose at one point.

In the 1st trailer max appeared to be tuning something in while scanning the wasteland from the hilltop . I really dug the concept...weather he was tuning into other survivors...or just the voices in his head ,his hands are definitely fiddling with something and with the visible headphones I assumed it was an old Walkman radio . It was one of the few disappointments I had with the final cut was that it didn't show max from the front in this scene .It would explain exactly what he's doing ( even better if he's tuning in imaginary voices ) plus the close up of his costume with the interceptor behind him would have filled in some of the blanks regarding how we got to that moment . I read Blackmocco's post that the Bluetooth was just a production oversight....which seems the most likely scenario but is slightly disappointing considering the level of detail in other area's ...... nothing can be perfect though I guess

According to Mark Sexton it was Hardy's idea to plug his ear with the headphone, he didn't recall what was the purpose, quieting the voices in Max's head would as good of an explanation as any. He said that the decision to remove it, however was really pushed by the movie's editor, Margaret, George agreed and poof! It's gone. Whatever the reason for it was.

I wonder why the editor would object to it ? it is a pretty cool concept . I think the previous comment is correct that it is actually an ear bud with the cord cut and not a blue tooth which just adds to the whole "Batshit Crazy "persona Max now sports . On a whole other plain , perhaps his eardrum was perforated by the Glock going off right next to it in his fight with Furiousa and the ear bud is to keep dust and wind out of the injured ear ( except it was the other ear than in the promo shots above ) .There is an audible ringing after any gunshot or explosion near max . It would ( I assume )have been quite painstaking to CGI the earpiece out in the cutting room , so I guess they really wanted it gone .
