Slits Glasgow Smile

Post by johnentwistlespout »

One thing i've only just realised in the last week or so. And it kind of seems so obvious im a bit embarrassed about bringing it up because i think everyone probably sussed it immediately.

So once more - apologies for the additional new topic - things are getting messy!

Anyway here goes...Slit's 'Glasgow Smile'...did Max do this in the opening scene? Is Slit the war boy who he pushes up against the wall with the chain...because on my last viewing i noticed it goes right into the warboys mouth and he then slumps unconcious. If it is It means that there is a long period between Maxs second capture (off the hook) and the next scene....at least weeks for those staples to heal. But then I am guessing it must be weeks because the interceptor is fully functioning by the time the main piece of the story starts.

Good question, never thought of it like that. I personally didn't think that it was supposed to be Slit that Max slams up against those pipes using his chained hands, but i guess it could have been and the time frame between Max getting dragged back into the citadel and then Furiosa escaping is actually weeks.

The movie is set over 2-3 days , the war boy you see Max slam into the pipe doesn't seem to be Slit in fact I think he kills that dude by mashing his head
I wondered if the character Slit was in fact a homage to Heath Ledger who was once slotted to play Max before he died , his last role was the Joker

The ripped open cheeks of Slit also reminded me of the character Kakihara of the movie Ichi the killer.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

The chase in the movie takes place over 3 days but the entire story in the film is 4-5 days.

I wondered the same thing when I first saw Fury Road, then on subsequent viewings I wasn't too sure either way. It would make sense that Slit was the one whose face was mangled by Max (hence the hatred/rivalry between them throughout the remainder of the film…not to mention the taking of Max car, etc, etc)

It might be of interest as a wee side note, that in Glasgow, a Glasgow Smile is usually termed a Chelsea Smile…must be regional thing!!!

That's an interesting point your making! I never really even thought about it until this post.

He actually doesn't slump unconscious. He quickly gets up again and immediately chases after Max.

"Slit's scars are all self inflicted. He's the most extreme warboy. He regularly opens himself up and staples himself back together."

"Slit is obsessed with knives, we don't get to see the true extent of it in the film other than when he tries to decapitate Max".

Slit has gone insane from his devotion to Immortan Joe and wanting to die gloriously in battle, to the point he is self mutilating himself. Its a good contrast to Splendid who was self mutilating herself so she would look ugly to Immortan Joe(the scars on her head). We see Slit's erratic behaviour throughout the film, from trying to take Nux's position and leave him behind, to being an asshole denying to the ground that the Immortan looks at Nux, "I got his boot!" scene and eventually making a mess of the box manoeuvre which destroys the People Eater Fuel Truck.
